The three sensitive queens

Once upon a time there lived a king of Ujjayani by name of Dharmadhvaja, who had three exquisitely sensitive queens. He loved all three of them very much, all of them were of unparalleled beauty.

On one occasion, while the king was playing with the first queen, he ruffled her hair. The lotus flower on her ear fell over her thigh, and made a wound and she cried out loud. The king was surprised at her sensitivity and immediately requested medical attention for her.

On another occasion, when he was with the second queen on a full moon night on the roof of his palace, the queen suddenly felt her skin burning of the moonlight. The king ordered medical attention for her too and was again surprised at her sensitivity.

On third occasion, when he was with the third queen, she collapsed on the floor on hearing of the sound of a mortar grinding rice, far far away. The king immediately ordered medical attention for her and was surprised too.

Since then he took utmost care of his three ultra sensitive queens.  Betaal stops and asks King Vikram asks this question: Who among the three queens is the most sensitive? Vikram replies with a lot of thought, "The third one, as she had not even been touched by the light or flower. She had only heard a noise from distance."

As soon as Vikram had finished his answer, Betaal disappeared back to the tree.

Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundela

Chhatrasal Bundela drew his inspiration from his father, Champat Rai who revolted against the alien rule of the Mughal Empire. When his father attained martyrdom (from Suicide when he was hemmed by the Mughal army of Aurangzeb) in the year 1661  Chatrasal was only 12 years old.

It is said that at his birth time, a mongoose came by to greet and bless the child Chhatrasal with five gold coins, signifying the gift of divine powers. And, on the other side, the Mughal army also attacked the couple as the baby was just delivered in the jungle. Recognizing the existential threat to all of them, Champatarai’s sight fell upon the valley between two hills, determined to do something unimaginable. Upon reaching the end of the hill, he took the newborn Chhatrasal in his arms, offered the shoulder to Queen Sarandha, and jumped off the hill by holding her arm.

What a miraculous happening! As if divine power had entered the 62 years old Champatarai’s being, as soon as he kicked himself in the air for an impossible jump, he almost appeared flying in the air eventually landing safely onto the other side of the hill where no enemy could reach. The enemies following them were astonished to see this daring jump. This scene is depicted in Chhatraprakash in poetical form. It says: “Maharaja Champatarai had flown from the hill like a peacock, that is why this historical hill of Kakarkanchanhar got its name as Mor-Pahari.”

The Flame of Rebel

The flame of rebellion started burning within Chhatrasal’s heart which was already saddened by his parents’ death. He was desperate to respond to his parent’s killers as well as the Mughal ruler. He was very disturbed by the fact that his brothers and sisters were not willing to fight for justice and a great cause. While everyone was stuck in the fearsome past, the flame burning within the sixteen years old Chhatrasal’s heart was growing bigger and bigger.

Sixteen-year-old Chhatrasal realized that the huge Mughal army can only be defeated by building a strong and sizable army, and by gaining knowledge of war operations and strategies. So, to learn first-hand the customs, strategies, strengths, and weaknesses of the Mughal army, in 1665AD-1666AD, brave Chhatrasal even didn’t hesitate to Join The Mughal Army led by Mirza Raja Jai Singh.

This enlisting shook his conscience as at times it felt like betraying his parents and the Bundelkhand. On the other hand, he realized that only iron can cut iron, and the strongest rope breaks only from where it is weak. So, he made it his goal to learn first-hand the customs, strategies, strengths, and weaknesses of his enemy from within.
This was the call of the time to ultimately demolish the Mughal power. His conscience settled by thinking that even Lord Rama had sent his brother Lakshmana to his arch-enemy Ravan to learn political science.

So, despite his goals being exactly opposite to Jai Singh’s, Chhatrasal, his cousin Baldiwan and his brother Angadrai approached Jai Singh as he was preparing for a campaign in the south. Jai Singh gladly welcomed and included in his army, brave Chhatrasal’s team. This was the first success of the rebellious flame of his conscience.

The Famous meet

In 1670, he met Shivaji Maharaj and decided to follow his path of Hindawi Swaraj. It is believed that Shivaji Maharaj granted him a Bundel sword. This union of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Chhatrasal became an invaluable heritage of history. The history of the eternal protection and security of Hindutva was written in this holy hour of the union of these two warriors.

On the advice of Shivaji Maharaj, Chatrasal launched his revolt in his kingdom to distract the focus of the Mughals. The Temple destruction policy of Aurangzeb helps Chatrasal to gain some followers in the region of Malwa and Bundelkhand.

Due to this, the wave of nationalism and freedom from Mughal rule reached its zenith and Chatrasal took full advantage of it.

he initial campaigns of Chatrasal were on Dhamuni district and on the eastern part of Bundelkhand. He defeated the Mughal forces there and people now claimed him as the savior of Hindus.

From 1668-1678 Maharaja Chatrasal raided several Mughal forts which were loosely guarded. During his time he defeated the Mughal Faujdars like Randaullah khan, Hashim Khan, Fidai khan.

An ascetic name Sant Prannat became the spiritual guru of Maharaja Chatrasal. It is believed that it was Sant Prannat who gave the title of Maharaja to Chatrasal and also made the discovery of the famous diamond mine (Panna) possible.

Chatrasal carved out a large and powerful kingdom in the eastern part of Bundelkhand. From these defeats, the Mughals became more and more anxious, and to put an end to the activities of Maharaja Chatrasal they sent Jaswant Singh a Mughal Mansabdar to finish him.

However, the Mughals were able to stop Chatrasal and forced him to surrender to accept Aurangzeb’s suzerainty. But this was a tactical move from the Maharaja who decided to live today and fight tomorrow.

In 1686 Maharaja again launched his expeditions against Mughal contingents.

Note: A peace treaty was again signed by Maharaja with the Mughals in the year 1696 probably just to recover from the war losses.

In the year 1700, several expeditions were launched by the Mughals to subdue him but all went in vain.

In the year 1705, he signed a peace treaty with the Mughals and was given 4 Hazari Mansab. After the death of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Empire collapsed, and with this Maharaja Chatrasal Bundela’s long struggle also ended.

Meaning: “If Chhatrasal was not there, all people in Bundelkhand and other parts of India would have to undergo forcible conversion to Islam or Islamic way of life.”

Story of King Shibi

The king Shibi, a descendant of king Bharata of lunar dynasty, was famous for his truthfulness, justice, and keeping his word. Once The king of righteousness, Dharmaraj, himself decided to test the strength of character of Shibi Rana.

Once when the king was alone on the terrace of his palace, he saw one dove coming towards him with great speed. An eagle was after him, and to escape from the clutches of the chasing eagle the dove made frantic effort to hide some where. Seeing the king on the terrace, the frightened dove took shelter in his lap. The dove said, "O king, save my life, I have come under your shelter."

The king had vowed to protect anyone who took his shelter. Thus the weak and deprived could not be exploited by the rich and strong. However, this was a new experience for Shibi Rana. Was he in any way obliged to protect a bird who seeks his refuge? Contemplating for a while, the king decided that even tress, animals, and birds require protection and help as do human beings.

Therefore, the king said, "Have no fear my son. That eagle would not be able to touch even your feather. Relax in peace, have no worries." So saying the king readied himself to face the rapidly approaching eagle. The eagle landed in front of the king and said, "O king, you have hidden my prey. Please release him so that I can appease my hunger."

The righteous king saw the point in eagle's demand. He faced a peculiar dilemma of protecting the dove, and at the same time not to deprive the eagle of his rightful prey! He decided to resolve the issue by offering the eagle equal amount of meat from his kitchen. But the eagle insisted on having his prey -the dove - as his food. After some discussion the eagle agreed to set the dove free on two conditions.

The eagle said, "O King, I shall let the dove go, if equal weight of flesh from your body is offered to me as food."

Shibi Rana was quite pleased with the adjustment. He thought that a pound (or two) of flesh from his body would not kill him and the life of the dove in his shelter would also be saved.

Thus he was happy that he was saved from a great sin of 'inability to protect the weak'.

The eagle then put his second condition, saying, "O king, if a single tear drops from your eye I shall be constrained to accept you flesh as my food."

The king agreed and called for the knives and the balance. In one pan of the balance the dove was kept and on the other side a large chunk of flesh from the right thigh of Shibi Rana. But strange as it might seem, the pan with the dove always weighed more even as additional flesh was added! Thus almost whole of the right half of the king's body was cut. Still the weight could not be equaled.

At this juncture a drop of tear appeared in the left eye of the king. The eagle objected to this saying, "O king, I cannot accept the food given in distress. The tear in your eye shows that you are unhappy. So give me my prey back and you shall regain your normal health."

With a faint smile on his lips, Shibi Rana said, "Behold, O eagle, the left eye is not crying out of grief; this is a tear of joy. Now my left half of the body will also be used to honour the word I have given to you. Otherwise, if only right had satisfied you, the left half of the body would have been denied this great opportunity of sacrifice! Therefore, my dear friend, the left eye cries out of joy!"

This ultimate sacrifice of Shibi Rana was unparalleled in the history. The eagle and the dove disappeared and in their places stood the King of righteousness -Dharmaraj and the king of heavens --the Indra. Gods from the heavens showered flowers, perfumes, and praise on the king. They granted many boons to this noble king.

King Shibi had passed the ultimate test to uphold Dharma, a true duty of every king. It is said that this king ruled for many years and after his death went directly to heaven to enjoy the fruits of his righteous karma.

Story of Shakuntala & Dushyanta.

Shakuntala is considered to be the mother of Emperor Bharata and the wife of Dushyanta who was the founder of the Paurav vansha (Paurav Dynasty).

Menaka had come at the behest of the King of the Gods Indra to distract the great sage Vishvamitra from his deep meditations. She succeeded in distracting him, and sired a child by him. Vishwamitra, angered by the loss of the virtue gained through his many hard years of strict ascetism, distanced himself from the child and mother to return to his work. Realizing that she could not leave the child with him, and having to return to the heavenly realms, Menaka left Shakuntala, just after birth, on the banks of the Malini River on the peaks of the Himalayas. Rishi Kanva found her in the forest surrounded and protected by birds (Shakunton in Sanskrit), so she was named Shakuntala.

Once, while out on a hunt with his army, Dushyant passed through a forest. Here Dushyant came across the ashram of Rishi Kanva, the son of Kashyapa Rishi.

Dushyant, pursuing a male deer wounded by his arrow into the ashrama, saw Shakuntala nursing the deer, her pet, and fell in love with her. He profusely begged her forgiveness for harming the deer and spent some time at the ashrama. They fell in love and Dushyant married Shakuntala there in the ashram. Having to leave after some time due to unrest in the capital city, Dushyant gave Shakuntala a royal ring as a sign of their love, promising her that he would return for her.

Shakuntala spent much time dreaming of her new husband and was often distracted by her daydreams. One day, a powerful rishi, Durvasa, came to the ashram but, lost in her thoughts about Dushyant, Shakuntala failed to greet him properly. Incensed by this slight, the rishi cursed Shakuntala, saying that the person she was dreaming of would forget about her altogether. As he departed in a rage, one of Shakuntala's friends quickly explained to him the reason for her friend's distraction. The rishi, realizing that his extreme wrath was not warranted, modified his curse saying that the person who had forgotten Shakuntala would remember everything again if she showed him a personal token that had been given to her.

Time passed, and Shakuntala, wondering why Dushyant did not return for her, finally set out for the capital city with her father and some of her companions. On the way, they had to cross a river by a canoe ferry and Shakuntala ran her fingers through the water. Her ring slipped off her finger without her realizing it.

Arriving at Dushyant's court, Shakuntala was hurt and surprised when her husband did not recognize her, nor recollected anything about her. Humiliated, Shakuntala returned to the forests and, collecting her son, settled in a wild part of the forest by herself. Here she spent her days as Bharat, her son, grew older. Surrounded only by wild animals, Bharat grew to be a strong youth and made a sport of opening the mouths of tigers and lions and counting their teeth!

Meanwhile, a fisherman was surprised to find a royal ring in the belly of a fish he had caught. Recognizing the royal seal, he took the ring to the palace and, upon seeing his ring, Dushyant's memories of his lovely bride came rushing back to him. He immediately set out to find her and, arriving at her father's ashram, discovered that she was no longer there. He continued deeper into the forest to find his wife and came upon a surprising scene in the forest: a young boy had pried open the mouth of a lion and was busy counting its teeth! The king greeted the boy, amazed by his boldness and strength, and asked his name. He was surprised when the boy answered that he was Bharat, the son of King Dushyant. The boy took him to Shakuntala, and thus the family was reunited.

Ratnadurg Rubies (Chandamama Magazine of October 1971)

Half a dozen horsemen were picking their way up a breakneck path. There was no mistaking their leader. Prince Santasimh was impatient to see his beloved city of Ratnadurg after a tour of neighbouring kingdoms, which had taken longer than anticipated.

But his astonishment left his lips when he pulled up at the brow of the hill and peered keenly across the tangled countryside. Instead of seeing the bustling city of Ratnadurg, he was looking- at a city of the dead. There was no sign of life, only a horde of hideous vultures hovering over the city.

Without a word, the prince wheeled his horse and set off at a headlong gallop down the side of the hill, with his entourage strung out well behind. With a grim face, the prince rode into the city in absolute shambles. Mutilated corpses lay everywhere, and whoever had invaded the town had spared neither man, woman or child.

Inside the palace, the carnage was even worse. From the piled-up corpses, it was plain to see that a last desperate stand had been made, and in the forefront lay the body of his brother, the ruler, with his sword still in his hand.

As he stood there, the prince was sure to hear a pitiful cry from close by. Hurrying toward the sound, the prince discovered the palace priest lying in a welter of blood, close to death.

The priest greeted the prince with a wan smile. “I knew you would come,” he gasped in an almost inaudible voice. “Two nights ago, Kasim, a guard captain, opened the city gates for Krurasimh and his murderous horde. No one was spared, and they searched high and low for the famous Ratnadurg rubies. But I saved them.” Feebly the priest entered his robe and brought out the precious ruby necklace. “Take them, and go from here before Krurasimh returns.”

Soon afterwards, the old priest died, and the prince calling to his followers, decided to leave this city of death but vowed that one day he would make Krurasimh pay for his foul deeds.

As the prince and his entourage left the city, they didn’t escape unobserved. Kasim, the treacherous captain of the guard, was hiding close to the city wall, hoping he could find the whereabouts of the Ratnadurg rubies. Mounting his horse, Kasim rode furiously across the country to overtake Krurasimh, who was returning to his kingdom.

Coming up to Krurasimh and his force, Kasim jumped off his horse and, running up to Krurasimh, shouted, “Halt! One knows where the rubies are. If I tell, what will be my reward?” “A thousand pieces of gold,” replied Krurasimh.

Prince Santasimh has the rubies,” cried Kasim. “And the prince has just left the city riding due north. Now pay me my reward.”

“You shall certainly have your just dues,” said Krurasimh. “Yesterday, you sold out your king. Tomorrow it would be my turn. So here is your reward.” With that, Krurasimh whipped out his sword and, with one slash, decapitated the renegade captain.

Meanwhile, Prince Santasimh rode steadily on. His mind was tortured by the thoughts of the massacre at his beloved home. Suddenly, one of his retinues pointed out the distant band of riders galloping to overtake them. Realizing that this boded no excellent and their horses were tired, the prince ordered his men to disperse and make good their escape.

The prince put his horse to the gallop, hoping to reach the thickly wooded hills before he was overtaken. But after a while, his horse began to falter; looking over his shoulder, he saw that one rider had outdistanced the rest and was hard on his heels.

Realizing that escape was impossible, the prince reined in his horse and waited for his adversary to come to grips. The prince soon recognized that the lone rider was none other than Krurasimh, so now he could avenge the murder of his relatives. As soon as Krurasimh came within striking distance, the prince threw his spear, which struck the horse behind the shoulder, causing the animal to plunge to the ground, throwing the rider.”

Krurasimh quickly regained his feet and, seeing Prince Santasimh coming towards him, drew his dagger and rushed at the prince. They should have been well matched, for both were tall and strong, but the prince remembering his slain brother, brushed Krurasimh’s mad lunge aside and, closing with his opponent, plunged his dagger up to the hilt into Krurasimh’s body.

Happy to have rid the world of the vile Krurasimh, the prince rode on his way. After days of travel, he crossed the pass into the vale of Kashmir. Here, tired and worried about his future, he took shelter in a garden and, throwing himself down on a bench, was soon fast asleep.

It so happened that this garden was part of the estates of the King of Kashmir and used solely by his daughter, Princess Sumati. The princess was walking through the park with her companions and gasped in surprise at seeing the handsome figure sleeping on the bench.

This awakened the prince, who jumped to his feet and stood tongue-tied in front of this beautiful girl, and before he could utter a word, the princess gave him a charming smile and ran off.

This princess so enamoured the prince he lost no time to find out who she was. His spirits dropped when he discovered she was the king’s daughter, and he was nothing now but a penniless prince. At least he still had the famous rubies, so bucking up his courage, he sought an audience with the king.

The king, to his surprise, greeted him with open arms, explaining that he had known the rulers of Ratnadurg for many years. The king was incredibly moved when the prince told the sad story of the massacre of Ratnadurg and how he had slain the vile Krurasimh.

“You must certainly stay at my court,” said the king, and then added with a twinkle in his eye. “I know that Princess Sumati will make you more than welcome.”

Very soon afterwards, the prince was betrothed to the princess, and they spent a long, happy life together.

The Kings Jester ( Chandramana magazine of October 1971 )

The great King Dharmapala had a jester at his court for many years. This jester was an ungainly dwarf and could be described as ugly as sin. Still, his antics, witticisms and funny stories made him very popular with the king, so much so that he was inclined to take liberties which nearly brought about his downfall.

It so happened that the king had a lousy gout attack one morning, which at the best of times, made him highly bad-tempered. But on this particular morning, the king could hardly walk, and then the jester took on himself to mimic the king hobbling along and giving pitiful groans.

This so enraged the king that he ordered the jester to be executed immediately. The poor jester fell on his knees and begged for mercy.

“You will get no mercy from me,” roared the king. “But given your long service, I will grant you one favour. You may choose how you are to die. By sunset, you will make your wishes known so that the executioner can make the necessary preparations.”

That evening the jester was brought before the king. Going down on his knees, the jester said sadly. “Your Majesty, I have decided how I want to die.”

“Then name it, and it shall be done,” said the king.

“God bless Your Majesty!” quickly replied the jester. I want to die of old age.”

This appealed to the king’s sense of humour, so he pardoned the jester and let him remain at court.
