Astika, Artiman, and Sunitha

Astika, Artiman, and Sunitha are ancient names that form a powerful anti-snake bite mantra found in the Adi Parva (First Book) of the epic Mahabharata.

After Astika saves the snakes from the snake sacrifice yagna of king Janmajaya who wanted to take revenge for the death of his father killed by the snake Takshak, the snakes ask Astika who is their nephew for a boon.

He then says that who so ever read this story in the day or in the evening should be forever free from the fear of snakes.

In sheer joy and gratitude for saving their lives, the surviving snakes offered a special boon to their savior nephew, Astika. They promised that they would never harm anyone who remembered his great act.

 English Transliteration (Pronunciation)

Asitaṃ cārtimantaṃ ca sunīthaṃ cāpi yaḥ smaret |Divā vā yadi vā rātrau nāsya sarpabhayaṃ bhavet ||

 *Word-by-Word Meaning*

Asitaṃ / Āstikaṃ: The sage Asita (or Astika, the savior of snakes)

ca: and

ārtimantaṃ: the sage Artiman

ca: and

sunīthaṃ: the sage Sunitha

ca api: also

yaḥ: whoever

smaret: remembers / calls to mind

divā: during the day

vā: oryadi vā: or

 ifrātrau: during the night

na: never

asya: to that person

sarpa-bhayaṃ: fear of snakes

bhavet: shall happen

⚡ *The Sacred Warning to Serpents*

The text goes on to explain that this mantra acts like a binding legal contract for the snake kingdom. If a person recites these names, any snake that approaches is reminded of its ancient oath.

If a venomous snake still refuses to leave and bites a person after hearing the names of Astika, Artiman, and Sunitha, it suffers a cosmic curse: its hood will instantly split into a hundred pieces like the bursting fruit of a Sinsa (Shisham) tree.

  English Transliteration (Pronunciation)

Asitaṃ cārtimantaṃ cha sunīthaṃ cāpi yaḥ smaret |Divā vā yadi vā rātrau nāsya sarpabhayaṃ bhavet ||

Dambhodbhava

There are two stories of this King.

The Classic Mahabharata Account:

The Arrogant King In the Udyoga Parva (Book of Effort) of the Mahabharata, the sage Parashurama tells Dambhodbhava’s story to Prince Duryodhana to warn him against the dangers of underestimating his enemies.

The Challenge: Dambhodbhava conquered the entire earth. Intoxicated by his power, he would ask his subjects every morning if anyone was equal to him in strength. Eventually, fed-up Brahmanas told him to challenge Nara and Narayana—two divine, peaceful sages meditating on Mount Gandhamadana.

The Defeat: The king marched to the mountain with his massive army and demanded a fight. The sages politely declined, stating they were simple hermits. When Dambhodbhava refused to back down, the sage Nara picked up a handful of ordinary Eshika (darbha) grass blades. The Lesson: Charging the grass with spiritual power, Nara threw the blades. They multiplied into an unstoppable cloud of missiles that blinded the king's soldiers and neutralized his entire army. Realizing their supreme power, Dambhodbhava fell at the sages' feet, begged for forgiveness, and abandoned his arrogance to rule righteously.

Second story

His name literally means "born of pride" or "manifestation of arrogance". In popular Puranic traditions, his soul is also widely identified as the previous incarnation of the warrior Karna.

The Puranic Account: Sahasrakavacha (The 1,000 Armours)In closely related Puranic texts, Dambhodbhava's legend merges with that of Sahasrakavacha ("One with a Thousand Armours").

The Complicated Boon: Dambhodbhava performed intense penance to the Sun God, Surya. He asked for a thousand divine armours fused to his chest. Surya granted them with three strict conditions to make him nearly immortal:

The armours could only be destroyed one at a time.

A warrior had to perform 1,000 years of penance just to fight him for another 1,000 years to break a single armour.

The moment an armour shattered, the person who broke it would instantly die.

The Tag-Team Battle: To defeat this loophole, the twin divine sages Nara and Narayana (who share one soul) fought him alternately. While Nara fought the demon for 1,000 years, Narayana meditated to gain power.

When Nara shattered an armour and died from the curse, Narayana used his spiritual power to revive him. Then, Narayana fought while Nara meditated. The Escape: This cycle repeated until 999 armours were destroyed.

Terrified, Dambhodbhava fled and took refuge inside the sun with Surya Deva.

🔄 The Karmic Link to the Mahabharata War Because the battle was left unfinished, the characters reincarnated in the Dwapara Yuga to settle the final debt:

Dambhodbhava was born as Karna, coming into the world naturally wearing his final piece of divine armour (Kavacha) and earrings (Kundala) given by his father, Surya.

Nara reincarnated as the archer Arjuna, who was destined to finally destroy that last remaining piece of armour and defeat his ancient rival on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.Narayana reincarnated as Lord Krishna, continuing his eternal role as the guide and protector of Nara.
