Daanveer Bhama Shah

Rishi Mrikandu and Marudmati his wife had no child and hence were very sad. They started praying to Lord Shiva and after long tapashya (penance) Shiva appeared in front of them granting them a boon of a son. But the catch was that their son would either be very intellegent having a shorter lifespan or will live long and will not be so intellegent. Mrikandu and his wife choose the 'intellegent son' option and Markandeya was born.

Markandeya turned out to be a strong devotee of Lord Shiva. As he grew up as a teenager his parents started worrying for his life. Upon seeing Rishi Mrikandu and Marudmati depressed Markandeya insisted on knowing the reason and the truth was revealed. Markandeya didn't wanted to die at a young age leaving his parents alone and sad and hence started his tapashya offering prayers to Bhagwan Shiva in front of a Shiva Linga. This is when it is said that Mrityunjaya Mantra was believed to be created by Markandeya to please Lord Shiva.

When Yamraj send his messenger to take Markandeya's life, he was in deep meditation and the messenger had to return empty handed. Seeing this Yamraj himself came down to earth to take Markandeya who immediately embraced the Shiv Linga in front of him asking for mercy. Yamraj had to complete his duty and hence threw his noose on Markandeya which accidentally fell around Shiva Linga. This made bhagwan Shiva very angry and he killed Lord Yamaraj immediately.

All Gods gathered together and pleaded to Bhagwan Shiva to revive Yamaraj as death of Lord Yama would disrupt the balance of the entire universe. Bhagwan Shiva agreed and brought Yamaraj back to life but on a condition of letting Markandeya live to which all Gods agreed.

Story of Nachiketa & Yama – The Soul & Brahman

 Source:

The story is a conversation between Nachiketa (a teenage boy) and Yama (Lord of death) from ''KATHOPANISHAD'' (5th Century BC).

Story:

Nachiketa was the son of the sage Vājashravas. He was performing a sacrifice named Viswajet Yajna. In this Yajna, the performer had to give away all his wealth. In ancient times, Cows were designated as valuable and special possessions and hence Vajashrava, desiring a gift from the gods, decided to donate all his cows to Brahmins.

Nachiketa was in his teens, and he was observing the sacrificial ritual with innocent interest. He was surprised to notice that his father was giving away only old and disabled cows unable to give milk.

Nachiketa was very intelligent & with pure heart. He said his father that he has heard in this Yajna, one has to give up all that one possesses. This being the case to whom will you give me?” Vajashravas did not give any reply. After some time Nachiketa asked again the same question, but in vain. He did not get any response from his father. Again for the third time, Nachiketa repeated the same question.

Vajashravas could not control his temper; he burst out saying to his own son, “I will give you Yama, the God of Death.” Nachiketa followed the words of his father and went to the kingdom of Death. However, during that time Yama was not present. None dared to admit Nachiketa. So he waited near the gate for three days and three nights without taking even a drop of water. When Yama returned and found Nachiketa at his doorstep he felt sad for keeping a Brahmin waiting for three days and three nights. He ordered his attendants to fetch holy water to invite and welcome Nachiketa. After the hospitality offered to Nachiketa, Yama told Nachiketa, “Dear child, I have not done good by keeping you waiting for three days. So I request you to ask for three boons.”

Nachiketa asked Yama:

1. First boon - O Lord, let my father not be anxious about me, and let his anger against me vanish. When I go back to earth, let him recognize me and receive me back gladly.” “Granted son,” said Yama.

2. Second boon - Teach me the proper ritual for the fire sacrifice. Yama agreed and taught Nachiketa the proper ritual for the fire sacrifice.

3. The Third Boon

When Yama asked Nachiketa to ask for the third boon, the latter asked him to impart the knowledge of the Supreme Self (Atmavidya) and the mystery of death.

But before granting the boon, Yama wanted to test whether Nachiketa deserved to be the able recipient of that knowledge.

Accordingly, he first described the difficulty of acquiring the knowledge of the Supreme Self (atmavidya), as it is too subtle to be realized and even demigods (Devas) are confused about this.

Yama advised him to seek any other boon than knowledge of atman.

Yama Attempts To Tempt Nachiketa With Worldly Pleasures

But Nachiketa remained steadfast in his resolve, and so Yama tried to divert him by asking him to seek boons such as having sons and grandsons who would live a hundred years, having unlimited numbers of cattle, elephants, horses, and gems, ruling over a very big kingdom or any other boon equal to those, or full enjoyment of worldly pleasures not available to a mortal being in this world.

Nachiketa, as a true lover of knowledge, refused to accept any of these, saying that all these things are transient.

Nachiketa was bold enough saying that one can never reach the eternal through the worldly possessions. Therefore he has renounced all desires for worldly pleasures and have come here with the hope of wining the Eternal through the instructions of the God of Death.

It was too difficult for Yama to change the mind of young Nachiketa. So finally, he agreed to tell Nachiketa about the mysteries of life and death with the following words:

“The Self is immortal. It was not born, nor does it die. It did not come out of anything, neither did anything came out of it. Even if this body is destroyed, the soul is not destroyed.”

“The one who thinks that he is the slayer and the one who thinks that he is slain, both are ignorant. For the Self neither slays nor is it slain.”

“Smaller than the smallest and larger than the largest, the Self is living in all beings.”

“The knowledge about it can neither be obtained by discussion, nor by brain power, nor even by much learning. It reveals itself to the deserving one.”

“This body is the chariot, intelligence the driver, the senses are the horses, conscience the rein and the soul is the lord of the chariot. The Self is superior to body, mind and senses.

“Greater than the individual soul is the enveloping super consciousness, the seed of everything in the universe, still greater is the Ultimate Person than whom there is nothing greater. He is the goal of our aspiration. Once That (Supreme Self) is realized, death loses all its terrors, and the one who has realized becomes immortal.

“The path to realization is long and difficult, like the razor’s edge, narrow and sharp. Therefore there is no time to be lost. Awake, arise, bestir yourself, and do not stop until the goal is reached.”

The famous Jīmūtavāhana , a Vidyadhara ( demi god) was the son of Jimutaketu who ruled over Kanchanpura in a valley in the Himalayas.

The fame of Jīmūtavāhana spread throughout the three worlds, and all the Vidyādharas grew jealous of him. And they thought it the most propitious time and arrayed their army against Jīmūtavāhana.

His father Jīmūtaketu was ready to meet the enemy. But Jīmūtavāhana told him, "Father ! I am perfectly sure that no body could defeat you in battle. But see how mean it is to destroy so many lives and win the country merely for the pleasures of this fragile body. So let us go away from here. Leave the kingdom to them."

Jīmūtaketu, who was pleased at this generous nature of his son, respected his wish and went with his family to the Malaya mountain and lived there.

Mitrāvasu, the son of Viśvāvasu, the King of the Siddhas and Jīmūtavāhana became close friends. One day Jīmūtavāhana was wandering about in the forest when he saw in the middle of a garden a temple dedicated to Devī and a young woman of exquisite beauty, surrounded by her maids, singing hymns and worshipping Devī.

Jīmūtavāhana was attracted by her. Love budded in her heart also. On enquiry it was understood that she was Malayavatī, the sister of Mitrāvasu. After that both of them engaged in a little talk of love. Hearing her mother calling, Malayavatī instantly went home. Being fallen head-long in love, Jīmūtavāhana spent the night somehow or other and at dawn reached the temple with a hermit boy. While the hermit boy was consoling Jīmūtavāhana , Malayavatī also came there. Jīmūtavāhana and his friend hid behind a tree. She was alone, and since she could not bear separation from her lover she decided to commit suicide and standing at the steps, she said "Devi ! If it is impossible to get that Jīmūtavāhana as my husband in this birth, let it be so. But bless me that I may have my wish granted in the next birth at least". Saying this she tied one end of her upper garment on the tree and tried to commit suicide. Instantly there was an ethereal voice which said, "Daughter, don't do such rash things. Jīmūtavāhana will become your husband. He will also become the emperor of the Vidyādharas ." Jīmūtavāhana-came and saved her from death. Her maid appeared and said with delight. "Friend! you are very lucky. Today I heard what prince Mitrāvasu said to his father Viśvāvasu. Thus he said 'Father! Jīmūtavāhana who gave away his own Kalpaka tree for the welfare of others has come to this place. It will bring prosperity to us, if we show our hospitality to this noble guest by giving our Malayavatī to him. It is very difficult to get such a noble man for my sister anywhere else." The father consented.

Their marriage took place. Delightful days of married life passed one by one. One day Jīmūtavāhana and Mitrāvasu went for a walk. They reached a forest on the seashore. Seeing some bones there Jīmūtavāhana asked Mitrāvasu about them. Mitrāvasu said: "In ancient days Kadrū, the mother of Nāgas (serpents) made Vinatā, the mother of Garuḍa, her slave by some trick. Garuḍa liberated his mother from slavery. But the hatred increased day by day and Garuḍa began to eat serpents, the children of Kadrū. Seeing this, Vāsuki the King of Nāgas entered into a contract with Garuḍa, so as to prevent the nāgas from being destroyed altogether. The arrangement was that Vāsuki would send a serpent everyday to Garuḍa. Garuḍa ate all those serpents sent by Vāsuki in this place. These are the bones of those poor snakes."

When Jīmūtavāhana heard this story his heart was filled with pity. He decided to save the life of at least one serpent by giving his body instead. But the presence of Mitrāvasu was an obstacle to carry out his wish. At that particular moment a minister of Viśvāvasu appeared there and took away Mitrāvasu saying that he was wanted by his father. Left alone, Jīmūtavāhana stood there when he saw a young man coming with an old woman who was crying bitterly. On enquiry Jtmūtavāhana learned that in accordance with the agreement with Garuḍa, the old woman was bringing her only son Śaṅkhacūḍa to give him as food to Garuḍa. Jīmūtavāhana told them that he would take the place of Śaṅkhacūḍa that day. The mother and the son reluctantly agreed to his desire. The old woman went away crying and Śaṅkhacūḍa went to the temple.

Hearing the sound of Garuḍa’s wings Jīmūtavāhana laid himself on a stone and Garuḍa took him in his beak and flew to the top of the Malaya Mountain. On the way the jewel of Jīmūtavāhana known as 'Chuḍāratna', which was soaked in blood fell down, in front of Malayavatī. Knowing that it was the jewel of her husband, with a terrible cry she ran to her father. Because of his knowledge of arts and sciences, Jīmūtaketu also knew everything and with his wife and daughter he went to the top of the Malaya mountain.

In the meanwhile, Śaṅkhachuḍa, having done obeisance to 'Gokarṇanātha' (God), came back to the stone where he had left Jīmūtavāhana and seeing a pool of fresh blood, became sad and silent. Then determining that he would save Jīmūtavāhana at any cost, he went up the mountain following the track of the blood drops.

Garuḍa took Jīmūtavāhana to the peak of the mountain and began to peck at him. Jīmūtavāhana grew more and more delightful as the pecking became harder. Garuḍa looked at him with wonder and thought, "Surely, this is not a nāga. It must be a Gandharva or somebody else." Not knowing what to do he sat looking at his prey, who invited him to finish off his meal. By this time Śaṅkhacūḍa had reached the spot. Soon Jīmūtaketu with his wife and Malayavatī also arrived. They all cried aloud. Garuḍa was in great confusion.

When he knew that he was about to eat the famous Jīmūtavāhana, who had given away even the Kalpaka tree for the good of others, Garuḍa was filled with remorse. Instantly Jīmūtavāhana died. The parents and Śaṅkhachda cried out. Malayavatī fell on the ground and cried. Then looking up she called out with tears. "Ha ! Devi ! Jagadambikā ! you have told me that my husband would become the emperor of the Vidyādharas. Has your boon become futile because of my misfortune?" Devī appeared and said "Daughter ! My words will not become futile." Then Devī sprinkled Amṛta (ambrosia) on Jīmūtavāhana and brought him to life. He sprang up more radiant than before, and was anointed as emperor of the Vidyādharas by Devī. When Devī disappeared Garuḍa who was much pleased, told Jīmūtavāhana to ask for any boon.

Jīmūtavāhana requested for the boon that Garuḍa should stop eating the Nāgas and that all the serpents who had been reduced to bones should be brought to life again. Garuḍa granted him that boon. All the serpents which had been killed by Garuḍa came to life again. All the gods and hermits came there with joy. After all had gone, Jīmūtavāhana went with his relatives to the Himālayas as the emperor of Vidyādharas.

Sukanya was the beautiful daughter of King Sarathi and once while going on and hunting expedition they came to the ashram of the powerful Rishi Chyavan who was not present in the ashram at that time.

They felt at peace and relaxed at the ashram so decided to rest there for some time and Sukanya went out with her friends to play in the forest where she saw two streaks of light in an ant hill and thought them to be some fireflies. She took two sticks to pluck them out, but unfortunately it was Rishi Chayavan who was meditating and whose whole body was covered with the ant hill and trying to pluck out the fireflies, she accidentally blinded the holy sage.

As a penance, Sukanya decided to marry the Rishi and started serving him devotedly.

The sage was very old and bent. One day the celestial physicians, the Ashwini twins visited the ashram and suggested that they could bring the sage back to his youth.

They took the sage with them to a lake which had medicinal powers and all three of them dipped inside the lake and when they came out they looked alike with the same clothes and full of youth.

Sukanya was asked to choose and identify which one is her husband and if she made the wrong choice she would have to go with one of the Ashwini twins.

Sukanya meditated on the goddess and she was asked to look into the eyes of all three of them. The person whose eyes blinked was a human. Where as the celestial beings' eyes did not blink and she easily identified her husband.

The ashwini twins blessed her and departed as Sukanya lived with Rishi Chyavan happily ever after. Her father was also happy with her.

It is said that Rishi Chauhan, son of Sage Brighu was the person who made the famous Chyavanprash.

Blessed is Kiran Baisa. Praised be her valour

Many historians have praised the greatness of Akbar, but very few historians have described Akbar's petty antics.

Akbar used to organize Nowruz fair every year in Delhi with his dirty intentions, in which entry of men was prohibited. One day Maharana Pratap's niece, younger brother Maharaj Shaktisingh's daughter came to see the decoration of the fair, whose name was Baisa Kirandevi, who was married to Prithviraj of Bikaner.

Seeing the beauty of Baisa Kirandevi, Akbar could not control himself and without thinking, he fraudulently called her to the Janana Mahal through maidservants. As soon as Akbar tried to touch Baisa Kirandevi, Kirandevi took out a dagger from the waist knocking him down and put her foot on his chest and she put the dagger on his neck

And said Neench... Naradham, you don't know that I am the niece of Maharana Pratap, whose name does not give you sleep, say what is your last wish, Akbar's blood dried up, you would never have thought that Emperor Akbar today at the feet of a Rajput Baisa Akbar said, I made a mistake in recognizing you. Please forgive me Devi, then Kiran Devi said that after today there will be no fair of Nowruz in Delhi and will not disturb any woman. The fair was never held after that day.

The description of this incident has been given on page number 632 in Sagat Raso composed by Girdhar Asiya. This incident has also been told through a couplet in a painting in Bikaner Museum.

Kiran  Baisa climbed like a lioness pulling a dagger on him

Akbar begged for his life.

Blessed is Kiran Baisa!! Tribute to her bravery 🚩
