The Indomitable Spirit of Biplobi Jatindranath Mukherjee

History often remembers the battle for India’s independence through the lens of non-violent resistance, but running parallel to that movement was a fiery torrent of revolutionary nationalism. At the vanguard of this armed struggle stood Jatindranath Mukherjee, immortalized in the annals of freedom as Bagha Jatin (Jatin the Tiger). He was a man of extraordinary physical prowess, profound intellectual depth, and an unyielding commitment to absolute liberty. His life story reads like an epic saga of courage, culminating in a legendary trench battle that mirrored the heroic last stands of ancient warriors.

The Making of a Legend: Wresting the Tiger

Born on December 7, 1879, in Kayagram (now in Bangladesh), Jatin grew up infused with a strong sense of righteousness and physical vigor, largely influenced by his deeply spiritual and brave mother, Sharatshashi. He grew up to be an imposing figure—fearless, athletic, and fiercely empathetic to his fellow countrymen suffering under British subjugation.

The epithet "Bagha Jatin" was not a mere honorific; it was earned in a feat of unbelievable physical courage. In 1906, while visiting his native village, Jatin crossed paths with a ferocious Royal Bengal Tiger that had been terrorizing the local population. Armed with nothing but a small Darjeeling dagger and his bare hands, Jatin engaged the apex predator in a life-and-death struggle. Despite being severely mauled, he managed to strike a lethal blow to the tiger's neck. He survived the encounter, though it required extensive surgery. From that day on, the subcontinent knew him as Bagha Jatin—the man with the strength and heart of a tiger.

Organizing the Underground: The Soul of Jugantar

Jatin was far more than a physical powerhouse; he was a brilliant strategist and a highly educated intellectual. While working as a stenographer in the government secretariat, he clandestinely anchored the revolutionary underground in Bengal. He became a central pillar of the Anushilan Samiti and later spearheaded its more radical branch, the Jugantar party.

Jatin envisioned a synchronized mass uprising to overthrow the British Raj. His philosophy was encapsulated in his famous dictum:

"Amra morbo, jagat jagbe" (We shall die to awaken the nation).

He understood that to defeat a global empire, Indian revolutionaries needed internal unity, meticulous organization, and external military assistance. He united various fractured revolutionary factions across Bengal under a single umbrella, earning the immense respect of contemporary leaders. Even Niralamba Swami, a prominent revolutionary, remarked that Jatin was the embodiment of the divine energy needed for India's awakening.

The Christmas Plot: An International Conspiracy

With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Jatin saw a golden, unprecedented opportunity. Great Britain was heavily entangled in Europe, leaving its Indian garrison thinned out. Jatin, alongside international revolutionaries like Rash Behari Bose and the leaders of the Ghadar Party in America, orchestrated what came to be known as the Hindu-German Conspiracy.

Through the network of the Berlin Committee, Jatin established contact with the German Empire, which agreed to provide arms, ammunition, and funds to Indian revolutionaries to trigger a massive mutiny within the British Indian Army. The plan was cinematic in scale: a German ship, the SS Maverick, was to land on the coast of Balasore in Odisha, laden with tens of thousands of rifles and millions of rounds of ammunition. Jatin’s men were prepared to seize the railways, cut telegraph lines, and march on Calcutta to declare a free government.

The Battle of Balasore: A Heroic Last Stand

However, the grand plan crumbled due to a combination of espionage failures and intercepted communications. British intelligence intercepted the plot, and the SS Maverick never arrived. Realizing that the dragnet was closing in, Jatin, along with four of his closest lieutenants—Chittapriya Ray Chaudhuri, Niren Dasgupta, Manoranjan Sengupta, and Jyotish Chandra Pal—retreated to the dense forests of Mayurbhanj in Odisha to evade capture.

The British authorities, led by the determined District Magistrate Kilby, mobilized a massive force of armed police and military units to track down the five revolutionaries. Refusing to flee and abandon his comrades, Jatin decided to make a stand.

On September 9, 1915, on the banks of the Burhabalang River near Balasore, history witnessed an unforgettable confrontation. Five young Indian men, armed only with Mauser pistols, took positions in a makeshift trench against a heavily armed British force of over three hundred soldiers equipped with high-powered modern rifles.

For over two hours, an intense gunfights raged. The sky echoed with the roar of gunfire. Jatin and his men fought with unparalleled tactical precision, holding off the massive army. Chittapriya fell dead early in the encounter. Jatin, bleeding profusely from multiple bullet wounds, continued to fire, shielding his remaining comrades until their ammunition was completely exhausted.

Legacy of the Tiger

A severely wounded Jatin was captured and taken to the government hospital in Balasore. Even as he lay dying, his primary concern was the safety of his surviving comrades; he took full responsibility for the entire operation to shield them from torture. On September 10, 1915, Bagha Jatin breathed his last. He was only 35 years old.

So profound was his valor that even his adversary, Charles Tegart—the notorious British Intelligence chief who relentlessly pursued Bengal's revolutionaries—later noted with profound respect that if Jatin had been an Englishman, his statue would have graced Trafalgar Square.

Bagha Jatin’s martyrdom did not signal the end of the revolution; rather, it served as a beacon. His sacrifice sowed the seeds of defiance that eventually culminated in India's independence three decades later, cementing his place as one of the most selfless, fiercely courageous titans of the freedom struggle.

The Story of Dhruva – The Boy Who Became the Pole Star

Long ago, in the ancient kingdom of King Uttānapāda, there lived a little boy named Dhruva. His name meant firm, immovable, eternal—a name that would one day define his destiny.

King Uttānapāda had two queens. The elder queen, Sunīti, was gentle, wise, and kind. Dhruva was her son. The younger queen, Suruci, was beautiful and favored by the king. She had a son named Uttama.

Though Dhruva was born a prince, fate had written a different path for him.

The Wound That Changed Destiny

One day, little Dhruva, only five years old, saw his stepbrother Uttama sitting happily on their father’s lap. With innocent joy, Dhruva too ran forward and tried to climb onto his father’s lap.

Before he could reach, Queen Suruci stopped him.

Her words were sharp as arrows.

“You are not born from my womb. If you wish to sit on the king’s lap, you must first worship the Lord and be born again from me!”

The king remained silent.

That silence pierced deeper than Suruci’s words.

Little Dhruva’s heart burned—not with hatred, but with hurt. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he ran to his mother, Sunīti.

She embraced him softly and spoke words of truth:

“My child, the only one who never rejects anyone is the Supreme Lord. If you seek true honor, seek Him.”

Those words planted a seed in Dhruva’s heart.

The Child Who Chose the Forest

That very night, Dhruva made a decision astonishing for a five-year-old child.

He would find God.

He left the palace and walked alone into the forest.

The winds howled. The forest was dark. Wild animals roamed. Yet Dhruva’s determination was brighter than fear.

There, in the solitude of the woods, he met the great sage Narada.

Narada, seeing such a young child alone, asked gently:

“Where are you going, child?”

Dhruva replied with unwavering voice:

“I seek the Lord. I want a place so high that no one can ever push me down.”

Narada tested him, suggesting he return home. But Dhruva stood firm.

Seeing his resolve, Narada smiled and taught him a sacred mantra:

“Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya.”

He instructed Dhruva to meditate upon Vishnu, the Lord who sustains the universe.

The Penance That Shook the Universe

Dhruva began his tapasya.

The forest became his temple.

First, he ate fruits and berries. Then leaves. Then only water. Finally, he gave up food altogether.

He stood on one leg, eyes closed, mind fixed upon Vishnu.

Months passed.

His concentration grew so powerful that the gods themselves trembled. The entire universe felt the weight of his penance.

It is said that when Dhruva held his breath in meditation, all beings felt their own breath pause.

The devas approached Lord Vishnu and pleaded:

“Please bless this child. His tapasya shakes the cosmos.”

The Divine Vision

Suddenly, before Dhruva, a brilliant light appeared.

It was Lord Vishnu, radiant, serene, holding the conch, discus, mace, and lotus.

Dhruva opened his eyes—and for a moment, he was speechless.

The Lord touched Dhruva’s forehead with His conch. Instantly, divine wisdom flowed into the boy’s heart. Hymns of praise poured from his lips.

Vishnu spoke gently:

“Child, what do you seek?”

In that divine presence, Dhruva’s earlier anger melted away. He no longer desired revenge or position.

He said:

“My Lord, I sought broken glass, but I have found a diamond. I desire nothing but devotion to You.”

The Lord smiled.

The Eternal Blessing

Yet Vishnu granted him more than he asked.

He blessed Dhruva with a kingdom and long, righteous rule. But beyond that, He gave him something extraordinary:

Dhruva would become the Dhruva Nakshatra—the Pole Star.

Fixed in the heavens.

Unmoving.

A guiding light for all travelers.

Even today, the Pole Star shines steadily in the night sky—symbol of unshakable devotion.

The Deeper Meaning

Dhruva’s story teaches profound truths of Hindu theology:

Pain can become the doorway to spiritual awakening.

Determination, even in a child, can move the universe.

True devotion transforms desire into surrender.

What begins as wounded pride can end as divine love.

Dhruva did not merely seek a seat on his father’s lap.

He found a place in eternity.

And whenever we look at the northern sky and see that steady star, we remember the boy whose faith was firmer than the mountains.

That is why his name is Dhruva — the Unshakable One. ✨

Lalitaditya Muktapida , The Alexander of Kashmir

Chronicler Kalhana in his work Rajatarangini provides detailed information about the Karkota dynasty which held the occupation of the Kashmir valley. Karkota dynasty took power in the valley of Kashmir in the first half of the 7th century CE.

The greatest ruler of the dynasty was Lalitaditya Muktapida who ruled from 724 to 761 CE. His accession to the throne marked an era of glory and prosperity, which Kashmir failed to regain even after centuries. His prolonged wars for expansion like those of Alexander earned him the title of Alexander of Kashmir.

Lalitaditya launched a policy of expansion and extended the power of Kashmir beyond its boundaries. Lalitaditya was able to vanquish the Turks, Tibetans, Kambojas, and others. The political conditions of the subcontinent provided him an impetus to expand his political dominions.

Tibetan invasion of Kashmir in 747 CE is said to have forced him to turn back. Chinese Annals mention that Laitaditya sent an ambassador to the Chinese court of Yuen Tsun to seek aid from the emperor against the common enemy Tibetans. Chinese Emperor and Laliaditya despatched approximately 200,000 men against Tibetans and inflicted a crushing defeat. Kalhana and Alberuni mention that Kashmiris observed second of Chaitra as a day of Lalitaditya’s victory over the Tibetans.

He lost his life in a distant expedition to North. Kalhana mentions two legends about his death. According to one version, Lalitaditya perished through excessive snow in a country called Aranyaka (modern Afghanistan). Another version made him end his own life to escape being captured when separated from his army and blocked on a difficult mountain range.

Lalitaditya undertook public welfare works such as the construction of canals and irrigation projects. He built a big vihara (monastery) and Buddhist temple at Hushkapura (modern Ushkur). Towns such as Suniscatapur, Lalitapur, Darpitapur, Lokpunya (modern Lokbhavan) were built by him. However, Lalitaditya’s greatest constructions are the city of Parishapura and the temple of Martand.

The temple was destroyed in 15th century CE, on orders of sultan Sikander Butshikan, its ruins still stand tall. Ruins of the temple of Martand (Sun) which the king had constructed is a striking object of ancient Hindu architecture. Located in the Anantang district, the temple is the oldest sun temple in India. The temple is 60 feet long and 38 feet wide, its height is approximately 75 feet.

Lalitadtiya was not only a tireless warrior and great conqueror but also an eminent sponsor of learning art and architecture. His virtues as a humane conqueror, patron of art and architecture, and thorough sponsorships to scholars rank him as one of the greatest kings of India.

 Adventure of a Young Tantrik

In the darkness of a desolate cremation ground, King Vikram faces a vampire’s challenge. As the tale of a young tantrik unfolds, themes of ambition, love, and the true essence of power emerge in this captivating story.

An Eerie Encounter

Darkness enveloped the night, creating a weird atmosphere. Occasional rain fell while thunder clapped, accompanied by the moans of jackals and the eerie laughter of spirits. Ignoring his fears, King Vikram swerved and brought the corpse down once again. As he crossed the desolate cremation ground with the corpse on his shoulder, the vampire that possessed it spoke, “O King, I wonder who inspired you to undertake this unusual task at such an unearthly hour. I hope he is not a tantrik. A tantrik can mislead a person. Allow me to narrate an incident to illustrate my point. Pay attention; it might bring you some relief.”

The Tale of Suvak

The vampire continued: In the Vidyachala hills, there lived a yogi, who was also a tantrik. He lived a quiet life, wishing not to be widely known. Nevertheless, seekers came from far and wide, praying for him to teach them. Among them was a young man named Suvak, who had lived with the yogi for several years. He was aware that the yogi possessed far greater powers than he ever revealed. One day, Suvak bowed and pleaded, “O Master, teach me all you know. Let your mysterious powers come down to me, and I will remain ever faithful.”

The yogi, after some pause, replied, “You can have great powers if you marry the princess of the kingdom of Ujjal.” Suvak immediately set off for Ujjal, lodged in the house of a nobleman, and started displaying his miraculous abilities. When the king summoned him to the palace, Suvak performed wonders, impressing everyone, including the princess, who eagerly showed interest in his talents.

A Proposal and Its Repercussions

Suvak, emboldened, approached the princess for a private audience. There, he confessed, “My guru has assured me I can become the greatest tantrik if….” The princess, puzzled, asked, “What’s the condition?” “Only if I could marry you!” he declared, prompting her serious response, “Gentleman! That is out of the question. I am betrothed to Kumarendra, the young King of Vijaypuri.” Despite Suvak’s attempts to sway her with promises of power, the princess remained steadfast.

When Kumarendra arrived to solidify his engagement, Suvak confronted him, desperately trying to dissuade him from marrying the princess. In anger, Suvak cursed Kumarendra, disfiguring him. However, the princess defended Kumarendra, stating her love was true and deeper than appearance alone. Ultimately, their marriage took place, breaking Suvak’s spell and restoring Kumarendra’s original visage. The princess insisted on Suvak’s imprisonment for his treachery.

Wisdom in Power

After being freed, Suvak returned to the yogi, demanding why he hadn’t revealed the futility of his quest. Calmly, the yogi said, “Seek the answer yourself. If you can, you’ll make progress.” Suvak, bewildered and frustrated, departed without change.

The vampire turned to King Vikram with a challenging tone, demanding to know what the yogi intended for Suvak to discover. King Vikram answered, “One who wields great power must be noble-hearted and selfless; otherwise, their power can lead to destruction. The yogi wanted Suvak to see how he misused his limited abilities for selfish desires. If Suvak realizes this, he can begin to rise above his selfishness.”

As soon as King Vikram completed his responses, the vampire vanished, taking the corpse with him.
