 The King and the Ascetic (Introduction Story)

King Vikramaditya of Ujjain was known far and wide for his courage, wisdom, and sense of justice. One day, an ascetic came to the king’s court and began presenting him with a fruit every day. The king accepted the fruits politely and handed them over to the royal treasurer.

After many days, one fruit accidentally fell and broke open, revealing precious gems inside. When the king inquired, he discovered that all the fruits contained gems. Surprised, Vikramaditya summoned the ascetic and asked him about his intention.

The ascetic confessed that he was performing a powerful ritual and needed the help of a brave and truthful king. He asked Vikramaditya to go to a cremation ground at night and bring him a corpse hanging from a tree.

Without hesitation, King Vikramaditya agreed.

That corpse was Betal, a powerful spirit that lived in dead bodies.

उज्जयिनी के राजा विक्रमादित्य अपने साहस, बुद्धिमत्ता और न्यायप्रियता के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे। एक दिन उनके दरबार में एक साधु आया और प्रतिदिन राजा को एक फल भेंट करने लगा। राजा विनम्रता से फल स्वीकार कर उन्हें राजकोष में भिजवा देते थे।

कई दिनों बाद एक फल नीचे गिरकर टूट गया और उसमें से बहुमूल्य रत्न निकले। जाँच करने पर पता चला कि सभी फलों में रत्न भरे थे। राजा ने साधु को बुलाकर इसका कारण पूछा।

साधु ने बताया कि वह एक विशेष तांत्रिक अनुष्ठान कर रहा है और उसे एक साहसी तथा सत्यनिष्ठ राजा की सहायता चाहिए। उसने राजा से अनुरोध किया कि वे रात्रि में श्मशान जाकर एक पेड़ पर लटके शव को ले आएँ।

राजा विक्रमादित्य बिना किसी भय के सहमत हो गए।

वही शव बेताल था — एक शक्तिशाली प्रेतात्मा।
