- Chanakya's original name was Vishnugupta. He was born in 350 BCE in Pataliputra (modern day Patna, also some believe that he was born in South India), the capital of the Magadha kingdom. Chanakya was born into a Brahmin family. He was the son of Acharya Chanak who was a teacher. He derives his name ‘Chanakya’ from his father’s name ‘Chanak’. Kautilya was the name given because of his gotra ‘Kotil’.

- He was a teacher (guru) at Takshashila University, one of the earliest universities in the world. Many princes and kings used to come to Takshashila for education.

- Chanakya was a great alchemist too. Folktales tell us that he converted a peak of a mountain into the GOLD by using some chemicals 

- Chanakya authored the ancient Indian political treatise called the Arthashastra. It covers topics like statecraft, economic policy, military strategy, espionage and laws.  

- He established and implemented a spy network to monitor corrupt officials and gather intelligence. This was crucial for governing a vast empire efficiently.

- He made an army of females so as to protect Chandragupta. Those women were called ‘Vish Kanyas’ and were capable of killing people. Even a kiss from these females were venomous.

- Chanakyaa develop early economic policies which stabilized taxation, promoted international trade, and boosted agriculture. He emphasized state control and investment in economic development.

- Legend has it that Chanakya had the ancient university of Takshashila burned down because he was insulted by a teacher there. He helped rebuild it later.

- It is believed that Chanakya gave small amounts of poison to Chandragupta Maurya through his meal to make him immune against the poisonous attacks of enemies. 

- One day, it so happened that Chandragupta shared his food with his queen Durdhara who was expecting her child and was 9 months pregnant. She died due to the poison But Chanakya saved the baby by cutting the belly of the queen. 

- Some say that the retreat of Alexander was strategically planned by Chanakya by arising distrust among the comrades of Alexander. It is said that after Porus bravery it was Chanakya who successfully demonstrated its fear in Alexander’s army thus making him retreat.

-चाणक्य का मूल नाम विष्णुगुप्त था। उनका जन्म 350 ईसा पूर्व में मगध साम्राज्य की राजधानी पाटलिपुत्र (आधुनिक पटना, कुछ लोगों का यह भी मानना है कि उनका जन्म दक्षिण भारत में हुआ था) में हुआ था। चाणक्य का जन्म एक ब्राह्मण परिवार में हुआ था। वह आचार्य चणक के पुत्र थे जो एक शिक्षक थे। उनका नाम 'चाणक्य' उनके पिता के नाम 'चणक' से लिया गया है। कौटिल्य नाम उनके गोत्र 'कोटिल' के कारण दिया गया था।

 - वह दुनिया के शुरुआती विश्वविद्यालयों में से एक तक्षशिला विश्वविद्यालय में शिक्षक (गुरु) थे। कई राजकुमार और राजा शिक्षा के लिए तक्षशिला आते थे।

 -चाणक्य एक महान कीमियागर भी थे। लोककथाएँ हमें बताती हैं कि उन्होंने कुछ रसायनों का उपयोग करके एक पहाड़ की चोटी को सोने में बदल दिया।

 -चाणक्य ने अर्थशास्त्र नामक प्राचीन भारतीय राजनीतिक ग्रंथ लिखा। इसमें शासन कला, आर्थिक नीति, सैन्य रणनीति, जासूसी और कानून जैसे विषय शामिल हैं।

 - उन्होंने भ्रष्ट अधिकारियों पर नजर रखने और खुफिया जानकारी इकट्ठा करने के लिए एक जासूसी नेटवर्क की स्थापना और कार्यान्वयन किया। एक विशाल साम्राज्य पर कुशलतापूर्वक शासन करने के लिए यह महत्वपूर्ण था।

 - उन्होंने चंद्रगुप्त की रक्षा के लिए महिलाओं की एक सेना बनाई। उन महिलाओं को 'विष कन्या' कहा जाता था और वे लोगों को मारने में सक्षम थीं। यहां तक कि इन महिलाओं का एक चुंबन भी जहरीला था।

 -चाणक्य ने प्रारंभिक आर्थिक नीतियां विकसित कीं जिन्होंने कराधान को स्थिर किया, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय व्यापार को बढ़ावा दिया और कृषि को बढ़ावा दिया। उन्होंने आर्थिक विकास में राज्य नियंत्रण और निवेश पर जोर दिया।

 - किंवदंती है कि चाणक्य ने तक्षशिला के प्राचीन विश्वविद्यालय को जला दिया था क्योंकि वहां एक शिक्षक ने उनका अपमान किया था। उन्होंने बाद में इसके पुनर्निर्माण में मदद की।

 - ऐसा माना जाता है कि शत्रुओं के जहरीले हमलों से प्रतिरक्षित करने के लिए चाणक्य ने चंद्रगुप्त मौर्य को अपने भोजन में थोड़ी मात्रा में जहर दिया करते थे। 

 - एक दिन, ऐसा हुआ कि चंद्रगुप्त ने अपना भोजन अपनी रानी दुर्धरा के साथ साझा किया जो अपने बच्चे की उम्मीद कर रही थी और 9 महीने की गर्भवती थी। जहर के कारण उनकी मृत्यु हो गई लेकिन चाणक्य ने रानी का पेट काटकर बच्चे को बचा लिया।

 - कुछ लोग कहते हैं कि सिकंदर के साथियों के बीच अविश्वास पैदा करके सिकंदर के पीछे हटने की योजना रणनीतिक रूप से चाणक्य ने बनाई थी। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि पोरस की वीरता के बाद वह चाणक्य ही थे जिन्होंने सिकंदर की सेना में सफलतापूर्वक अपना भय प्रदर्शित किया और उसे पीछे हटने पर मजबूर कर दिया।

चंद्रशेखर आजाद, जो सदा आजाद रहे

आज उनका बलिदान दिवस है।

भारतीय स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम के सेनानियों में चन्द्रशेखर आजाद का नाम सदा अग्रणी रहेगा। उनका जन्म 23 जुलाई, 1906 को ग्राम माबरा (झाबुआ, मध्य प्रदेश) में हुआ था। उनके पूर्वज गाँव बदरका (जिला उन्नाव, उत्तर प्रदेश) के निवासी थे; पर अकाल के कारण इनके पिता श्री सीताराम तिवारी माबरा में आकर बस गये थे।

बचपन से ही चन्द्रशेखर का मन अंग्रेजों के अत्याचार देखकर सुलगता रहता था। किशोरावस्था में वे भागकर अपनी बुआ के पास बनारस आ गये और संस्कृत विद्यापीठ में पढ़ने लगे।

बनारस में ही वे पहली बार विदेशी सामान बेचने वाली एक दुकान के सामने धरना देते हुए पकड़े गये। थाने में हुई पूछताछ में उन्होंने अपना नाम आजाद, पिता का नाम स्वतन्त्रता और घर का पता जेलखाना बताया। इस पर बौखलाकर थानेदार ने इन्हें 15 बेंतों की सजा दी। हर बेंत पर ये ‘भारत माता की जय’ बोलते थे। तब से ही इनका नाम ‘आजाद’ प्रचलित हो गया।

आगे चलकर आजाद ने सशस्त्र क्रान्ति के माध्यम से देश को आजाद कराने वाले युवकों का एक दल बना लिया। भगतसिंह, सुखदेव, राजगुरु, बिस्मिल, अशफाक, मन्मथनाथ गुप्त, शचीन्द्रनाथ सान्याल, जयदेव आदि उनके सहयोगी थे।

आजाद तथा उनके सहयोगियों ने नौ अगस्त, 1925 को लखनऊ से सहारनपुर जाने वाली रेल को काकोरी स्टेशन के पास रोककर सरकारी खजाना लूट लिया। यह अंग्रेज शासन को खुली चुनौती थी, अतः सरकार ने क्रान्तिकारियों को पकड़ने में पूरी ताकत झोंक दी।

पर आजाद को पकड़ना इतना आसान नहीं था। वे वेष बदलकर क्रान्तिकारियों के संगठन में लगे रहे। ग्वालियर में रहकर इन्होंने गाड़ी चलाना और उसकी मरम्मत करना भी सीखा।

17 दिसम्बर, 1928 को इनकी प्रेरणा से ही भगतसिंह, सुखदेव, राजगुरु आदि ने लाहौर में पुलिस अधीक्षक कार्यालय के ठीक सामने सांडर्स को यमलोक पहुँचा दिया। अब तो पुलिस बौखला गयी; पर क्रान्तिवीर अपने काम में लगे रहे।

कुछ समय बाद क्रान्तिकारियों ने लाहौर विधानभवन में बम फेंका। यद्यपि उसका उद्देश्य किसी को नुकसान पहुँचाना नहीं था। बम फेंककर भगतसिंह तथा बटुकेश्वर दत्त ने आत्मसमर्पण कर दिया। उनके वीरतापूर्ण वक्तव्यों सेे जनता में क्रान्तिकारियों के प्रति फैलाये जा रहे भ्रम दूर हुए। दूसरी ओर अनेक क्रान्तिकारी पकड़े भी गये। उनमें से कुछ पुलिस के अत्याचार न सह पाये और मुखबिरी कर बैठे। इससे क्रान्तिकारी आन्दोलन कमजोर पड़ गया।

वह 27 फरवरी, 1931 का दिन था। पुलिस को किसी मुखबिर से समाचार मिला कि आज प्रयाग के अल्फ्रेड पार्क में चन्द्रशेखर आजाद किसी से मिलने वाले हैं। पुलिस नेे समय गँवाये बिना पार्क को घेर लिया। आजाद एक पेड़ के नीचे बैठकर अपने साथी की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे। जैसे ही उनकी निगाह पुलिस पर पड़ी, वे पिस्तौल निकालकर पेड़ के पीछे छिप गये।

कुछ ही देर में दोनों ओर से गोली चलनेे लगी। इधर चन्द्रशेखर आजाद अकेले थे और उधर कई जवान। जब आजाद की पिस्तौल में एक गोली रह गयी, तो उन्होंने देश की मिट्टी अपने माथे से लगायी और उस अन्तिम गोली को अपनी कनपटी में मार लिया। उनका संकल्प था कि वे आजाद ही जन्मे हैं और मरते दम तक आजाद ही रहेंगे। उन्होंने इस प्रकार अपना संकल्प निभाया और जीते जी पुलिस के हाथ नहीं आये।

Chandrashekhar Azad, the hero who always remains free

 Today is his Balidaan Diwas. 

 The name of Chandrashekhar Azad will always remain foremost among the fighters of the Indian freedom struggle. He was born on July 23, 1906 in village Mabra (Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh). His ancestors were residents of village Badarka (District Unnao, Uttar Pradesh); But due to famine, his father Shri Sitaram Tiwari came and settled in Mabra.

 Since childhood, Chandrashekhar's heart was burning after seeing the atrocities of the British. In his adolescence, he ran away to his aunt in Banaras and started studying in Sanskrit University.

 It was in Banaras itself that he was caught protesting for the first time in front of a shop selling foreign goods. During interrogation at the police station, he told his name as Azad, father's name as Swatantrata and his home address as jail house. Angered by this, the police station officer punished him with 15 strokes of the cane. He used to say 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' on every cane. Since then his name ‘Azad’ became popular.

 Later, Azad formed a group of youth who liberated the country through armed revolution. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Bismil and others.

 Bird Pair and the Sea

"Do not underestimate the power of the timid".

A pair of Tittibha birds, husband and wife lived on seashore. The female Tittibha bird was expecting to lay eggs and raise a family.

 

When the time to lay eggs came, she asked her husband to look for a safe place to lay her eggs, "My dear, please look for some good and safe place for me to lay eggs as it is almost time for me to lay the them."

 

But the male Tittibha bird said, "Dearest, where in the world could be a better place than this seashore? Please lay your eggs here."

 

She disagreed, "The waves of sea on full moon nights are so high that they can drag even an elephant into it. No, please find a place away from here."

 

The male Tittibha bird laughed and insisted, "The Sea would not even dare to do any harm to my children! Do not fear unnecessarily and lay eggs here without any worries."

 

All the time, the Sea had been hearing this, and thought, "From a small bird as he, such impudence is not expected. I'll certainly take away his eggs to see what he does after that and teach him a lesson."

 

Within a few days, the female Tittibha bird laid her eggs in the seashore. Shortly afterward, when the birds went away in search of food, the Sea started making waves. The waves became higher and higher, till it swallowed the eggs into it.

 

The birds returned later to find the nest empty. The female Tittibha bird started weeping bitterly, "See for yourself that the waves of the sea has swallowed our eggs. You are a fool not to listen to me when I asked you to find a safe place to lay eggs."

 

The male Tittibha bird continued its stupidity, "Dear, don't you worry. I will prove to you how brilliant I am. I will dry the sea, and force it to return our eggs."

 

The female Tittibha bird wondered, "How can you dry this enormous sea?"

 

The male Tittibha bird explained, "Even small beings can overcome the strongest opponents if they are zealous. And so, I plan to dry up the whole sea by sucking its water with my beak."

 

The wife argued, "How can you suck the sea dry, when rivers like the Ganges and Indus, and hundreds of other rivers flow into it. There is no good in this babbling". While the husband argued, "I'll work day and night to suck all the water from the sea with my beak, which is as solid as iron. Man can succeed only after putting efforts".

 

The female Tittibha bird understood that she will not be able to convince him, "Dear, there is no point in arguing. If you want to conquer the sea, please call for your friends to help you". The husband agreed, "All right, I will do this with the help of my friends".

 

Now, all the friends of the male Tittibha bird were called and when they all gathered together, the male Tittibha bird explained his problem with the sea, and how it had insulted him, and how he plans to dry the sea to seek revenge.

 

All the birds, the swan, crane, peacock and other unanimously agreed that the task was impossible, "There is no good in this babbling. It is impossible for us to suck the sea to dry it up completely. Instead, let us visit our king, Garuda (Lord Vishnu's vehicle, and the king of birds ). When he comes to know that we have been harassed by the sea, he will get angry and seek revenge. Even if we merely pay him a visit to seek his advice, we shall feel relieved."

 

As decided, they all went to their king, Garuda, and explained the reason of them being so sad, "O King, the sea has robbed the eggs of the good Tittibha birds even after the fact that you are our protector. If this is allowed to continue, our entire race shall perish."

 

Garuda realized that the birds were in grave circumstances, and agreed to go and dry the entire sea. Just as he was leaving, a messenger arrived from Lord Vishnu who needed his assistance at once, for some divine task.

 

Garuda explained to the messenger that he was unable to serve his master at this time, "I am such a common servant to the Lord for him to need me. The sea, which is the resting place of the Lord, has swallowed the eggs of the Tittibha birds. I refuse to serve him if he will not force the sea to return the eggs at once. This is my firm resolution. Please let him know of it."

 

When Lord Vishnu came to know of Garuda's resolution from his messenger, he thought, "I can understand his behaviour and need to pacify him. He is the king and protector of all the birds. I must meet Garuda at once."

 

As Lord Vishnu visited Garuda, he bowed in respect and explained, "O Master, the sea, which is your resting place has insulted me by swallowing the eggs of my humble servant, the good Tittibha birds. It is out of the respect that I have for you that I have not taken any step for revenge."

 

Lord Vishnu considered his plea, "Come with me Garuda. You are right. The sea should not have done such a thing on purpose. Let us go and return the eggs to the Tittibha birds. After that we will leave, as I need your assistance."

 

They all went to the seashore where Lord Vishnu reprimanded the sea. Taking a thunderbolt in his hand, he warned, "O Sea, you have been wicked. Return the eggs of the Tittibha birds at once or dare to face my anger."

 

When the sea heard the warning from the Lord Vishnu himself, it was terrified. It apologised at once, and returned the eggs to the Tittibha birds.

 

The wise indeed say:

Do not underestimate the power of the timid.

 

 पंचतंत्र की कहानियाँ

 "निर्बल की शक्ति को कम मत समझो"।

 टिटिभा पक्षी का एक जोड़ा पति-पत्नी समुद्र तट पर रहते थे। मादा टिटिभा पक्षी अंडे देने और परिवार बढ़ाने की उम्मीद कर रही थी।

 

 जब अंडे देने का समय आया, तो उसने अपने पति से अंडे देने के लिए एक सुरक्षित जगह की तलाश करने के लिए कहा, "मेरे प्रिय, कृपया मेरे लिए अंडे देने के लिए किसी अच्छी और सुरक्षित जगह की तलाश करें क्योंकि अब मेरे अंडे देने का समय लगभग हो गया है।"  

 

 नर टिटिभा पक्षी ने कहा, "प्यारे, इस समुद्र तट से बेहतर जगह दुनिया में कहां हो सकती है? कृपया अपने अंडे यहां दें।"

 

 वह असहमत थी, "पूर्णिमा की रात को समुद्र की लहरें इतनी तेज़ होती हैं कि वे एक हाथी को भी इसमें खींच सकती हैं। नहीं, कृपया यहां से दूर कोई जगह ढूंढें।"

 

 नर टिटिभा पक्षी हँसा और जोर देकर बोला, "समुद्र मेरे बच्चों को कोई नुकसान पहुँचाने की हिम्मत भी नहीं करेगा! तुम व्यर्थ मत डरो और बिना किसी चिंता के यहाँ अंडे दो।"

 

 सागर हर समय यह सुन रहा था, और सोच रहा था, "उस जैसे छोटे पक्षी से, ऐसी निर्लज्जता की उम्मीद नहीं की जाती है। मैं निश्चित रूप से उसके अंडे छीन लूंगा, यह देखने के लिए कि वह उसके बाद क्या करता है और उसे सबक सिखाऊंगा।"

 

 कुछ ही दिनों में मादा टिटिभा पक्षी ने समुद्र के किनारे अंडे दे दिये। कुछ ही समय बाद, जब पक्षी भोजन की तलाश में दूर चले गए, तो समुद्र में लहरें उठने लगीं। लहरें ऊंची और ऊंची होती गईं, यहां तक कि उसने अंडों को अपने अंदर निगल लिया।

 अब, नर टिटिभा पक्षी के सभी दोस्तों को बुलाया गया और जब वे सभी एक साथ एकत्रित हुए, तो नर टिटिभा पक्षी ने समुद्र के साथ अपनी समस्या बताई, और कैसे इसने उसका अपमान किया था, और कैसे उसने बदला लेने के लिए समुद्र को सुखाने की योजना बनाई।

 भगवान विष्णु ने उनकी प्रार्थना पर विचार किया, "गरुड़, मेरे साथ आओ। तुम सही हो। समुद्र को जानबूझकर ऐसा काम नहीं करना चाहिए था। चलो हम चलते हैं और टिटिभा पक्षियों को अंडे लौटा देते हैं। उसके बाद हम चले जाएंगे, क्योंकि मुझे तुम्हारी सहायता की आवश्यकता है।" 

 

 वे सभी समुद्र तट पर गये जहाँ भगवान विष्णु ने समुद्र को फटकारा। उन्होंने अपने हाथ में वज्र लेकर चेतावनी दी, "हे समुद्र, तुम दुष्ट हो। तुरंत टिटिभा पक्षियों के अंडे लौटाओ या मेरे क्रोध का सामना करने का साहस करो।"

 

 जब समुद्र ने स्वयं भगवान विष्णु की चेतावनी सुनी तो वह भयभीत हो गया। इसने तुरंत माफ़ी मांगी और अंडे टिटिभा पक्षियों को लौटा दिए।

 

 बुद्धिमान तो सचमुच कहते हैं:

 निर्बल की शक्ति को कम मत आंको.

 

 

 

The Story of Identical rings and Hanuman ji

 In the Ramayana, Hanuman reaches Patala and sees a pile of identical rings, each belonging to a Rama. So, since Hanuman is a Chiranjeevi, does this mean that there are hundreds of Hanumans in the world?

The story of Lord Rāma Dropping his ring in a crack on the Ground, which reaches The Netherworlds, is a folklore, but There is a similar story, where Lord Rāma asks The son of Lord Vayu to Bring “Ring” for him. This story also proves the fact, that Rāmāyana happens in every aeon, and isn't a one timed event, and How Lord Hanūmān will become the Brahma of the next aeon (a part of him actually). The story i s found in the 53rd and 54t chapter of Srī Parāsara Samhita, Hanuman charitam by Maharīshī Parāsara.

After the war of Lanka was over, Lord Hanūmān once Wishes to see The Supreme Lord, His Arādhya once again, so he reached there at once. After the Duo of Bhakt and bhagwan were Done Meeting, Lord Rāma asks Lord Hanūmān to bring his ring from the Creator I.e Brahma deva, which was the very same ring, which Lord Anjaneya Gave Māa Sītā, and took all her sorrows away, during her stay at The Ashoka vatika. Thereafter, with the speed of Wind, Lord Hanūmān reached The Abode of Brahma deva, where he found him, Sanatkumar and other Gods and Rishis waiting for him already. All of them worshipped Lord Hanūmān with invocations and hyms, while The Great God Also reciprocated the same thing. Now when Hanuman ji told him about the reason of his coming, Brahma dev said he cannot part with the ring, Because The ring, which was as bright as 10 Milion suns, had The Image of Lord Rām on it, and He worshipped it daily. Finding the creator to be adamant, and Disobeying Lord Rāma, The powerful Incarnation of Lord Shiva instantly showed his Fierce form to all of them.

The form was Extremely difficult to look at, since it had the brightness of more than a billion suns combined. It had twenty arms, equipped with Powerful weapons, including Mace, goad, sword, chakra, Trident etc and Had Faces, which were looking in all directions. On seeing This majestic form, Brahma and other Gods thought as If Lord Shiva himself Was standing there in his Ugra form, ready to dissolve the creation the end of the timeline. Finally, He allowed Him to Take the ring after worshipping the Fierce form of the Lord, along with other Gods. The creator then led Him to a lake, Where There were not one, But countless such rings immersed in the lake. The Greatest devotee of Lord Rāma was both confused and Happy about this. After Thinking for a moment, He Left, without taking a ring. When He reached Lord Rāma, He understood everything on seeing Lord Hanūmān’s Face and said the following :

“Oh! Best one among the monkeys! Come here. My greatest devotee! There is no need for fear. There is no difference between us like between a shining disc and its reflection.”

He then asked Hanūmān ji to explain what he saw at the abode of the creator.

Lord Hanuman narrates the entire incident, and says that since there were countless such rings, Lord Rāma asked for Only one and He Couldn't identify the Real one, He Came back, afraid of breaching his orders. Lord Rāma was Impressed with his devotee and said :

To Hanumān, speaking in this manner, Rāma said so, “Oh! Hanumān! I am extremely pleased with your devotion, which none else can have. Auspiciousness be to you! Seek a boon. Do not hesitate in this. Many of my incarnations happened in the past. This Incarnation is for achieving some specific deeds. A ring of mine, representing me, was being given in every aeon (kalpa; a very long time cycle) to Brahma, who, like you, has control of own soul (ātmasamyamana). Keeping the unparalleled rings in the nectar-full lake, Brahma has been worshipping them in many ways, as though he is worshipping me.All these times, he is performing regular festivals grandly.”

After this, He asked Hanūmān ji to Visit the Abode again, And Bring back one of the rings, for His mother sita. Delighted at this, Lord Rāma gave him the boon to have authority over Brahma loka in the next aeon :

“Oh! Best of Monkeys! You felt very happy on seeing the Satyalōka. Hence, I bless, that you may get the authority over Brahmalōka. I am also very happy because of your unlimited devotion towards me. In Dandakāraņya (Danadaka forest; during Rāma’s forest dwelling times) you helped us very many ways. Oh! Hanumān! I cannot do return favour for every single favour that you did to us. Hence, for the goodness of all, attain the authority over the Brahmalōka.”

And it was after this, that He came to be known as Bhavişyadbrahma i.e The future creator, But The Brahma shall only be a Part of Lord Hanūmān

इस रूप को देखना बेहद कठिन था, क्योंकि इसमें एक अरब से अधिक सूर्यों की चमक थी। इसकी बीस भुजाएँ थीं, जिनमें गदा, अंकुश, तलवार, चक्र, त्रिशूल आदि शक्तिशाली हथियार थे और मुख भी थे, जो सभी दिशाओं में देख रहे थे। इस भव्य रूप को देखकर, ब्रह्मा और अन्य देवताओं ने सोचा जैसे कि भगवान शिव स्वयं अपने उग्र रूप में वहां खड़े थे, जो समय के अंत में सृष्टि को भंग करने के लिए तैयार थे। अंत में, उन्होंने अन्य देवताओं के साथ भगवान के उग्र रूप की पूजा करने के बाद उन्हें अंगूठी लेने की अनुमति दी। फिर विधाता उसे एक झील के पास ले गए, जहां एक नहीं, बल्कि अनगिनत ऐसी अंगूठियां झील में डूबी हुई थीं। भगवान राम के सबसे बड़े भक्त इस बात से भ्रमित और प्रसन्न दोनों थे। एक पल सोचने के बाद, वह बिना अंगूठी लिए चला गया। जब वह भगवान राम के पास पहुंचे, तो भगवान हनुमान का चेहरा देखकर सब कुछ समझ गए और निम्नलिखित कहा:

 "ओह! वानर में सर्वश्रेष्ठ! यहाँ आओ। मेरे परम भक्त! डरने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है. हमारे बीच चमकती डिस्क और उसके प्रतिबिंब की तरह कोई अंतर नहीं है।”

 फिर उन्होंने हनुमान जी से पूछा कि उन्होंने सृष्टिकर्ता के निवास पर क्या देखा।

भगवान हनुमान पूरी घटना का वर्णन करते हैं, और कहते हैं कि चूँकि ऐसी अनगिनत अंगूठियाँ थीं, भगवान राम ने केवल एक ही माँगी और वह असली अंगूठी की पहचान नहीं कर सके, वह अपने आदेशों का उल्लंघन करने के डर से वापस आ गए। भगवान राम अपने भक्त से प्रभावित हुए और बोले:

 इस प्रकार बोलते हुए हनुमान से राम ने कहा, “ओह! हनुमान! मैं तुम्हारी भक्ति से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूं, जो अन्य किसी से नहीं हो सकता। आपका मंगल हो! वरदान मांगो. इसमें संकोच न करें. मेरे कई अवतार अतीत में हुए हैं। यह अवतार कुछ विशिष्ट कर्मों की सिद्धि के लिए है। मेरी एक अंगूठी, जो मेरा प्रतिनिधित्व करती है, हर कल्प (कल्प; एक बहुत लंबा समय चक्र) में ब्रह्मा को दी जा रही थी, जो आपकी तरह, अपनी आत्मा (आत्मसंयमन) पर नियंत्रण रखते हैं। अमृतमय सरोवर में अद्वितीय वलयों को रखकर ब्रह्मा उनकी अनेक प्रकार से पूजा करते रहे हैं, मानो वे मेरी पूजा कर रहे हों। इन सभी समय वे नियमित उत्सव भव्यता से करते रहते हैं।''

 इसके बाद, उन्होंने हनुमान जी से फिर से निवास पर जाने और अपनी माता सीता के लिए एक अंगूठी वापस लाने के लिए कहा। इस पर प्रसन्न होकर, भगवान राम ने उन्हें अगले युग में ब्रह्म लोक पर अधिकार रखने का वरदान दिया:

 "ओह! बंदरों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ! सत्यलोक को देखकर तुम्हें बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई। अत: मैं आशीर्वाद देता हूं, कि तुम्हें ब्रह्मलोक पर अधिकार प्राप्त हो जाये। तुम्हारी मेरे प्रति असीम भक्ति से मैं भी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूँ। दण्डकारण्य (दण्डक वन; राम के वनवास के समय) में आपने हमारी अनेक प्रकार से सहायता की। ओह! हनुमान! मैं आपके हर एक उपकार का बदला नहीं चुका सकता जो आपने हम पर किया है। इसलिए, सभी की भलाई के लिए, ब्रह्मलोक पर अधिकार प्राप्त करें।

कणिक की कूटनीति

युवराजों की शिक्षा पूर्ण होने के पश्चात एक दिन महाराज धृतराष्ट्र ने शुभ मुहूर्त देखकर पाण्डु पुत्र युधिष्ठिर को उनके गुणों को देखते हुए युवराज नियुक्त कर दिया। अर्जुन और भीम की अगुआई में पाण्डवों ने सौवीर और यवन जैसे देशों को भी हस्तिनापुर साम्राज्य के अंतर्गत सम्मिलित कर लिया। पाण्डवों की इस प्रकार बढ़ती कीर्ति से धृतराष्ट्र को उनसे ईर्ष्या होने लगी और अपने इस शंका को लेकर परामर्श करने के लिये उन्होंने अपने मंत्री कणिक को बुलाया। कणिक अत्यंत ही चतुर और कूटनीति में पारंगत था। महाराज धृतराष्ट्र और मंत्री कणिक का यह संवाद कणिक की कूटनीति के नाम से विख्यात है।

कणिक को अपने पास बुलाकर राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा, “मंत्रिवर! पाण्डवों की दिनों-दिन उन्नति और सर्वत्र ख्याति हो रही है। इस कारण मुझे उसने ईर्ष्या होने लगी है और मुझे रातों को नींद भी नहीं आती है। कणिक! तुम सोच-समझकर बताओ कि मुझे उनसे मिलकर रहना चाहिये या उनसे शत्रुता करनी चाहिये?”

महाराज का प्रश्न सुनकर कणिक मुस्कराया और हाथ जोड़कर बोल, “महाराज! मैं इस विषय में अपने विचार आपके सामने रखता हूँ। आप मुझपर क्रोध किये बिना मेरी बात सुनिये।”

कणिक ने इस प्रकार धृतराष्ट्र से अनुमति लेकर अपनी बात आगे कही, “राजा को सर्वथा दण्ड देने के लिये तत्पर रहना चाहिये और सदा ही अपना पराक्रम दिखाना चाहिये। राजा अपनी दुर्बलता को छिपाकर रखे और शत्रुओं की दुर्बलता पर सदा दृष्टि रखे। शत्रु की दुर्बलता का पता चलने पर उन पर आक्रमण कर दे। जो राजा सदा दण्ड देने को तत्पर रहता है प्रजाजन उससे डरते हैं और उसकी आज्ञा का पालन करते हैं, इसलिए राजा को सभी कार्य दण्ड से सिद्ध करने चाहिये।”

“जिस प्रकार कछुआ अपने अंगों की रक्षा करता है, उस प्रकार राजा भी अपने सभी अंगों - राजा, मंत्री, राष्ट्र, दुर्ग, कोष, बल और मित्र की रक्षा करे और अपनी कमजोरी को छिपाये रखे। यदि कोई कार्य प्रारंभ कर दिया है तो उसे बीच में ही न छोड़े, क्योंकि शरीर में चुभा हुआ कांटा यदि पूरा नहीं निकाला जाए तो कई दिनों तक कष्ट देता रहता है।”

“राजा को अपना अनिष्ट करने वाले शत्रुओं का अंत कर देना ही उचित है। पराक्रमी शत्रु पर आपत्ति आने पर उसका संहार कर देना चाहिये और ऐसे समय में सम्बंध या सौहार्द इत्यादि का विचार नहीं करना चाहिये। शत्रु यदि दुर्बल भी हो तो उसकी उपेक्षा नहीं करनी चाहिये। जैसे थोड़ी सी आग भी ईंधन मिलने पर समस्त वन को जला सकती है, उसी प्रकार दुर्बल शत्रु भी समय आने पर विनाशकारी बन सकता है।”

“स्वयं दुर्बल होने पर अंधा-बहरा बन जाना चाहिये और अपने शत्रु के दोषों को अनदेखा और अपनी निन्दा को अनसुना कर देना चाहिये। ऐसे में शत्रु के समक्ष दीन-हीन दिखो और शिकारी के समान नींद का बहाना कर मृग के समान शत्रु को आश्वस्त कर उचित समय आने पर उसका अन्त कर देना चाहिये।”

“शरणागत पर दयाभाव दिखाकर उसे छोड़ देना अनुचित है, ऐसे शत्रु से सदा ही भय बना रहता है। जो सहज शत्रु हैं उनको मुँहमाँगी वस्तु देकर विश्वास में लेकर मार देना चाहिये। जो शत्रु पहले आपको कष्ट देता हो और अब सेवक बन गया हो, उसे भी नहीं छोड़ना चाहिये।शत्रुपक्ष के त्रिवर्ग (तीन प्रकार की शक्तियां - ऐश्वर्य, उत्साह और मंत्रणा), पंचवर्ग (पाँच प्रकृतियाँ - मंत्री, राष्ट्र, दुर्ग, कोष और सेना) तथा सप्तवर्ग (शत्रु को वश में करने वाले सात साधन - साम, दान, भेद, दण्ड, आकर्षण, विष और अग्नि) का सर्वथा नाश कर देना चाहिये। शत्रुपक्ष को जड़ से समाप्त कर उसके संबंधियों और सहायकों का भी अंत कर देना चाहिये।”

“राजा को अपने शत्रुओं की गतिविधियों की सदा जानकारी रखनी चाहिये और अपनी बातों को गुप्त रखना चाहिये।”

“कार्यसिद्धि के लिये सदाचार इत्यादि का सहारा लेना चाहिये। समय अनुकूल न होने पर शत्रु को कंधे पर ढोना भी पड़े तो ढोये परंतु अनुकूल समय आने पर उसे बिल्कुल भी नहीं छोड़ना चाहिये।”

“डरपोक को भय दिखाकर, शूरवीर के समक्ष विनम्र बनकर, लोभी को धन देकर और बराबर वाले तथा कमजोर शत्रु को पराक्रम से वश में करना चाहिये।”

“पुत्र, मित्र, भाई, पिता अथवा गुरु - कोई भी क्यों न हों, यदि वह शत्रु के स्थान पर आ जायँ तो उन्हें वैभव चाहने वाला राजा अवश्य नष्ट कर दे। विष देकर या आग से जलाकर धोखे से भी शत्रु को मारने में कोई बुराई नहीं है।”

“राजा के मन में यदि क्रोध भी हो तो भी ऊपर से मुस्कुराकर बात करे, कभी भी क्रोध में किसी का तिरस्कार न करे। शत्रु पर प्रहार करने से पहले और प्रहार करते समय भी उससे मीठे वचन बोले तथा उसके मरने पर शोक करे और विलाप करे।”

“राजा शत्रु के साथ अच्छा व्यवहार कर उसके मन में अपने लिये विश्वास पैदा करे और जैसे ही वह अपने मार्ग से विचलित हो उस पर प्रहार करे। इस प्रकार सदाचार का ढोंग करने से अपराध करने वाले का दोष वैसे ही छिप जाता है जैसे काले मेघों के पीछे आकाश।”

“जिसे शीघ्र समाप्त करना हो, उनके घर में आग लगा दो। धनहीन, नास्तिकों और चोरों को अपने राज्य में न रहने दो।”

“शत्रु के साथ मोहक व्यवहार करे और उसके प्रति अच्छे बर्ताव से उसे अपने वश में कर ले। समय आने पर अपने लाभ के लिए उसे मारने में संकोच न करे और उसे ऐसे नष्ट करे कि फिर से सर न उठा सके।”

“जिनसे भय न हो उनसे भी चौकन्ना रहे और जिनसे भय हो उनसे तो सभी प्रकार से सावधान रहे। जिनसे खतरे की आशंका नहीं होती ऐसे लोग समय आने पर विकट हानि पहुँचा सकते हैं।”

“जो विश्वास के योग्य नहीं हैं उनपे कभी विश्वास न करे और जो विश्वासपात्र हैं भी उन पर अति विश्वास न करे, क्योंकि अधिक विश्वास से उत्पन्न होने वाला खतरा राजा का जड़ से विनाश कर सकता है।”

भली भाँति जाँच परखकर अपने और शत्रु के राज्य में गुप्तचर नियुक्त करे। शत्रु के राज्य में ऐसे गुप्तचर नियुक्त करे जो साधारण दिखने वाले और वेश बदलने में निपुण हों।”

“उद्यान, भूमने-फिरने के स्थान, देवालय, मदिरालय, कुएँ, हाट, घाट इत्यादि स्थान जहाँ भीड़ इकट्ठी होती हो वहाँ अपने गुप्तचरों को नियुक्त करे।”

“राजा बातचीत में अत्यंत विनयशील हो परंतु हृदय चाकू के सामन तीखा होना चाहिए। अत्यंत भयानक कर्म करने को तत्पर होने पर भी मुस्कुराकर बात करे।”

“अवसर देखकर हाथ जोड़ना, पैर छूना, शपथ खाना, आश्वासन देना, आशा बँधाना - ये सब राजा को करना चाहिए।”

“राजा ऐसे वृक्ष के समान हो जिसमें फूल तो हों परंतु फल न हों, अर्थात अपनी बातों से लोगों को लाभ की आशा दिलाये परंतु उसकी पूर्ति न करे। फल लगने पर भी उन्हें प्राप्त करना कठिन हो, अर्थात लोगों के काम पूरे करने में देरी करे। उस पर लगा कच्चा फल भी देखने में पके से समान हो, अर्थात लोगों की दुराशाओं को पूर्ण न होने दे। कभी स्वयं जीर्ण न होने दे, अर्थात दूसरों के पोषण में खुद की हानि न करे।”

“धर्म, अर्थ और काम इन तीनों के सेवन में पड़ने वाली बाधाओं से राजा को बचना चाहिये और इनसे मिलने वाले फल को भोगने का प्रयत्न करना चाहिये।”

“राजा अपने हृदय से अहंकार निकाल दे। चित्त को एकाग्र रखे। सब से मधुर बोले। दूसरों की कमियाँ लोगों को न बताये। सब विषयों पर दृष्टि रखे और विद्वान लोगों के साथ मंत्रणा करे।”

“संकट की अवस्था में कोमल या भयंकर जैसे भी सही उससे निकलने का प्रयत्न करना चाहिये। संकट से उबरने के बाद धर्म के विषय में सोचना चाहिये। अर्थात संकट के समय धर्म को ध्यान में न रखते हुए उससे उबरने के लिए जो भी बन पड़े करना चाहिये।”

“जो शोक से ग्रस्त हों उन्हें पुरानी बातें बताकर सांत्वना दे या फिर भविष्य में लाभ की आशा दिलाकर शांत करे।”

“जैसे पेड़ के ऊपर सोया हुआ मनुष्य उससे गिरकर होश में आता है, वैसे ही शत्रु के साथ संधि कर निश्चिंत हो जाने वाला राजा शत्रु से धोखा खाकर ही सचेत होता है।”

“राजा कभी दूसरों के दोष लोगों के सामने न बताये और अपनी बातें सदा गुप्त रखे।”

“दूसरों को दुःख दिये बिना, अत्यंत क्रूर कर्म किये बिना और बहुतों के प्राण लिये बिना राजा संपत्ति अर्जन नहीं कर सकता है।”

“जब शत्रु की सेना दुर्बल, रोगग्रस्त, जल या कीचड़ में फँसी हुई, भूख-प्यास से व्याकुल या सब ओर से आश्वस्त हो शान्त पड़ी हो, उस समय उस पर प्रहार करना चाहिए।”

“धनवान मनुष्य दूसरे धनी के पास नहीं जाता। बिना स्वार्थ के कोई मैत्री निभाने का प्रयास नहीं करता। इसलिए अपने द्वारा सिद्ध होने वाले दूसरों के कार्यों को अधूरा छोड़ देना चाहिये जिससे उस स्वार्थ सिद्धि के कारण उनका आना-जाना लगा रहे।”

“राजा की योजना का पता मित्र या शत्रु को उसके आरंभ या सम्पूर्ण होने पर ही पता चले, पहले से नहीं।”

“जब तक अपने ऊपर संकट न आया हो तब तक उससे डरकर उसे टालने का प्रयास करना चाहिये, परंतु संकट सामने आने पर निडर होकर उसका सामना करना चाहिये।”

“जो मनुष्य दण्ड द्वारा वश में किये गए शत्रु पर दया करता है वह अपनी मृत्यु को ही अपनाता है।”

“किसी भी कार्य को करने से पहले बुद्धि से विचार कर देश और काल को ध्यान में रखकर आगे बढ़ना चाहिये।”

“छोटे शत्रु की उपेक्षा करने से वह ताड़ के पेड़ की तरह अपनी जड़ें जमा लेता है और घने वन में छोड़ी गई आग शीघ्र ही महा विनाशकारी हो जाती है।”

“जो मनुष्य थोड़ी-सी आग की भाँति अपने-आपको समृद्ध करता रहता है वह एक दिन बहुत बाद होकर बड़े शत्रु को भी ग्रास बना सकता है।”

“यदि किसी को किसी बात की आशा दें तो उसे शीघ्र पूरी न कर दीर्घकाल तक टाल दें। जब उसे पूर्ण करने का समय आए तो उसे कोई विघ्न डालकर आगे बढ़ा दें। और उस विघ्न का कुछ उपयुक्त कारण बता दें।”

“लोहे का चाकू शान पर चढ़ाकर तेज किया जाता है और चमड़े के संपुट (pouch) में छिपाकर रखा जाता है। उसी प्रकार राजा को अपना मनोभाव छिपाकर अनुकूल अवसर आने पर निर्दय होकर शत्रु के प्राण ले लेने चाहिये।”

कुरुश्रेष्ठ आप भी इस नीति का पालन करते हुए पाण्डवों के साथ यथोचित व्यवहार करें परंतु ऐसा कुछ न करें जिससे स्वयं को हानि हो। आपके भतीजे बहुत बलवान हैं, इसलिए ऐसा करिए जिससे आपको आगे चलकर पछताना न पड़े।

कणिक के साथ इस विचार विमर्श के पश्चात ही धृतराष्ट्र ने दुर्योधन, शकुनि और कर्ण की पाण्डवों को वारणावत भेजकर लाक्षागृह में आग में जला देने के षड्यन्त्र को अपनी सहमति प्रदान की थी।

Kanika's Diplomacy

 One day after the completion of the education of the princes, King Dhritarashtra, seeing the auspicious time, appointed Pandu's son Yudhishthir as the crown prince considering his qualities. Under the leadership of Arjun and Bhima, the Pandavas also included countries like Sauvira and Yavana under the Hastinapur Empire. Due to this increasing fame of Pandavas, Dhritarashtra became jealous of them and he called his minister Kanik for advice regarding his doubt. Kanik was very clever and adept at diplomacy. This dialogue between Maharaj Dhritarashtra and Minister Kanik is famous by the name of Kanik's Diplomacy.

 Calling Kanika to himself, King Dhritarashtra said, “Minister! Pandavas are progressing day by day and becoming famous everywhere. Because of this, I have become jealous of her and I don't even sleep at night. Particle! Please think carefully and tell me whether I should live with them or be hostile to them?”

 Hearing Maharaj's question, Kanik smiled and folded his hands and said, “Maharaj! I present my views to you on this subject. You listen to me without getting angry at me.”

 Thus, taking permission from Dhritarashtra, Kanik further expressed his views, “The king should always be ready to punish and should always show his bravery. The king should keep his weaknesses hidden and always keep an eye on the weaknesses of his enemies. When you find out the weakness of the enemy, attack them. The subjects fear a king who is always ready to punish and obey his orders, hence the king should accomplish all his tasks through punishment.”

“Just as a tortoise protects its limbs, so should a king protect all his limbs – the king, the ministers, the nation, the fort, the treasury, the forces and the friends, and hide his weaknesses. If you have started any work, do not leave it midway, because if the thorn stuck in the body is not completely removed, it continues to hurt for many days.

 “It is right for the king to destroy his enemies who are causing him harm. When a mighty enemy faces any objection, he should be destroyed and at such a time one should not think about relations or harmony etc. Even if the enemy is weak, he should not be ignored. Just as even a small fire can burn an entire forest when given fuel, similarly even a weak enemy can become destructive in time.”

 “When you yourself are weak, you should become blind and deaf and should ignore the faults of your enemy and ignore your criticism. In such a situation, look helpless in front of the enemy and pretend to be sleepy like a hunter, reassure the enemy like a deer and then end him at the right time.”

 “It is unfair to show mercy to the refugee and leave him, there is always fear from such an enemy. Those who are natural enemies should be killed by giving them a desired thing and taking them into confidence. The enemy who earlier gave you trouble and has now become your servant, should not be abandoned. Trivarga (three types of powers - opulence, enthusiasm and advice), Panchavarga (five natures - minister, nation, fort, treasure and army) of the enemy. ) and Saptavarga (seven means of subduing the enemy - Sama, Daan, Bheda, Dand, Charm, Poison and Agni) should be completely destroyed. After rooting out the enemy, its relatives and helpers should also be eliminated.”

The king should always be aware of the activities of his enemies and should keep his words secret.”

 “To achieve success, one should take help of good conduct etc. If the time is not favorable, even if you have to carry the enemy on your shoulders, carry him, but when the time is favorable, you should not leave him at all.”

 “The coward should be intimidated, the brave should be humble, the greedy should be given wealth and the equal and weak enemy should be subdued with bravery.”

 “Whoever it may be, son, friend, brother, father or teacher, if he comes to the enemy's place, he will surely be destroyed by a king seeking glory. There is no harm in killing the enemy even by deception, by poisoning or by burning him with fire.”

 “Even if the king is angry, he should still speak with a smile and never insult anyone in anger. Before attacking the enemy and while attacking, speak sweet words to him and mourn and mourn his death.”

“The king should treat the enemy well and create confidence in his mind and attack him as soon as he deviates from his path. In this way, by pretending to be virtuous, the guilt of the criminal becomes hidden just like the sky behind dark clouds.”

 “Whoever wants to be eliminated quickly, set fire to their house. Do not allow the moneyless, atheists and thieves to live in your kingdom.”

 “Behave charmingly with the enemy and bring him under your control by being nice to him. When the time comes, do not hesitate to kill him for your own benefit and destroy him in such a way that he cannot raise his head again.”

 “Be cautious even of those whom you do not fear, and be cautious in every way against those whom you fear. “People who are not aware of any danger can cause serious harm when the time comes.”

 “Never trust those who are not worthy of trust and do not trust too much even those who are trustworthy, because the danger arising from too much trust can completely destroy the king.”

 After thorough investigation, appoint spies in your kingdom and in the enemy's kingdom. “Appoint such spies in the enemy’s kingdom who are ordinary looking and adept at disguising themselves.”

 “Appoint your spies in gardens, places of recreation, temples, taverns, wells, markets, ghats etc., where crowds gather.”

 “The king should be very polite in conversation but his heart should be as sharp as a knife. “Speak with a smile even when you are ready to commit a terrible act.”

The man who keeps enriching himself like a little fire can, after a very long time, consume even a big enemy.”

 “If you give someone hope for something, do not fulfill it quickly and postpone it for a long time. When the time comes to complete it, move it forward by creating some obstacle. And give some suitable reason for that disturbance.”

 “An iron knife is mounted on a mount and sharpened and kept hidden in a leather pouch. Similarly, the king should hide his feelings and when the opportune moment comes, he should be ruthless and take the life of his enemy.”

 O Kurushrestha, you also follow this policy and behave appropriately with the Pandavas, but do not do anything that may cause harm to yourself. Your nephews are very strong, so do this so that you do not have to regret in future.

 It was only after this discussion with Kanika that Dhritarashtra gave his consent to the conspiracy of Duryodhana, Shakuni and Karna to send the Pandavas to Varanavat and burn them in the fire of Lakshagriha.

The true story of Shakuni

Was Shakuni plotting revenge to destroy the Kuru Linage? 

Was Shakuni Lame? 

Did Shakuni have magic dices?

The character of Shakuni requires much deeper study to avoid many misconceptions about the character. So here we are making an attempt at that.

Mahabharata clearly mentions Shakuni as the branches of the bad tree Duryodhana, of which Dhritarashtra is the root, Karna is the stem and Dushasana is the fruits. 

So was Shakuni a villain of the Mahabharata? Of course, without any doubt. Ved Vyasa himself has attested to that fact unambiguously. 

With that out of the way, lets explore the role of this Villain further in the great epic. 

We meet the character of the Shakuni for the first time during Gandhari's wedding. Now many people tell really interesting stories about how that went about. 

According to the chapter that covers the marriage of Dhritarashtra and Gandhari , Shakuni personally came to Hastinapur to drop his sister and lived there for some time their guest. It also clearly mentions Bhishma received him with respect and honoured him.

Now you know the extent of truth of the fake sob story often associated with Shakuni which somehow tries to legitimize his evil actions later on in the epic. "oh. but he did all that because of what was done to him family." Mahabharata clearly does not support any such sob story. There seems to be no sad motivation behind his actions later in the epic. 

Many people claim that Shakuni poisoned his nephew Duryodhana against his cousins and that prompted the poisoning of Bhima. Well Duryodhana did not need any inspiration from his uncle to do that. He was fully capable of extreme evil on his own. 

Later after Yudhishthira is declared Yuvaraj and Pandava gain popularity among the subjects of Hastinapur, it worries Dhritarashtra and he invites an advisor named Kanika. Many attribute this advise to Shakuni but Kanika is a different character in the epic.

Now the villainy of Shakuni starts. He along with Duryodhana, Karna and Dushasana hatches the plan to burn the Pandava at Varanavat. Dhritarashtra gave his blessings for this sinister plan.

Next we meet Shakuni when the news of Draupadi's wedding reaches Hastinapur. Here Shakuni shows his true colors and advices Pandavas to be eliminated and presents his case. He is wary about facing Pandavas in open battle with all their powerful allies. 

If he had taken an oath to destroy the Kuru clan and was a genius mastermind, this was an appropriate time to execute his plan. But here he presents a proper analysis and warns against waiting for Pandava to stand together with their allies before attacking them.

Shakuni again appears in the story when he is attending Yudhishthira's Rajasuya yagya in Indraprastha, along with his father Subala. 

Yes, Shakuni's father is alive and well and they have good diplomatic relations with the Kurus to have a royal invitation to the Rajasuya yagya. 

If there was any doubt, Subala's presence here clearly refutes the sob story of Shakuni's family being imprisoned, tortured and left to die. 

After the Rajasuya yagya on the way to Hastinapur Duryodhana speak to his uncle and talks about how he was burning with jealousy and he would commit suicide if he has to see Yudhishthira keep on prospering. 

 Shakuni advices Duryodhana to not be jealous. He even talks about Pandavas good luck and their strength to deter Duryodhana from this destructive thought process.

Now you all must be thinking this seems to be a good advice from someone we have already established as one of the villains of the story. 

That's the point. He was the villain but his extent of villainy has been greatly exaggerated in later retellings. 

The villainy part comes immediately after the above conversation when Shakuni proposes the idea of dyuta to his nephew. 

If you read carefully the proposal of dyuta was made by Shakuni to avoid the war. He clearly knew that his nephew stood no chance against the Pandava in open battle and wanted to avoid that situation. 

He did not want his sister's sons to die in battle so came up with other evil ways to achieve Duryodhana's happiness.

Shakuni probably knew that people in future will make absurd stories about him so he clearly explains his skill in the game of dice to his nephew. 

No magical dice. He was an expert gambler. Sometimes the explanation is that simple. 

There is no mention of any bones being involved in the construction of the dice.

Next few chapters are then dedicated to Duryodhana convincing Dhritarashtra for the game of dice and how they cornered Yudhishthira into accepting the invitation by calling it a friendly game between the cousins.

This is followed by this conversation between Shakuni and Yudhishthira. 

Here you can observe that Shakuni was good with words capable of manipulating people but he used that skill for Duryodhana's advantage not against him.

This is followed by the most evil part of the epic and Shakuni's biggest contribution.

Yudhishthira agreed for the game thinking it would be a game among the equals between himself and Duryodhana but he was pitted against an expert gambler Shakuni. 

As expected in such situation the lesser player kept losing to the world class player. 

After Draupadi was won in the game, Shakuni kept quiet enjoying the humiliation of Pandava and their wife but most of the talking on Duryodhana's behalf was done by Karna. 

Shakuni speaks next before the 2nd game of dice.

Duryodhana was still not happy and he again talks about committing suicide and proposes they seek Pandava during their exile and kill them. 

Shakuni advised against this. 

Shakuni enters the story again during Ghoshyatra, when he and Karna propose the idea of Duryodhana going to the jungle and enjoy seeing his enemies live a life of misery.

Now Duryodhana being himself, picks up a fight with Gandharva where everyone including Shakuni led by Karna start fighting the Gandharvas. Later Duryodhana's army along with Karna run away and he is captured.

Yudhishthira orders Bhima and Arjuna to rescue Duryodhana, who oblige.

 Duryodhana felt so humiliated at this that he decided to commit suicide (again). 

Everyone tries to convince Duryodhana to not commit suicide. What Shakuni says to him will blow your mind. 

He in facts asks Duryodhana to show gratitude towards Pandava and return their share of the kingdom to them.

This doesn't sound like someone who was manipulating Duryodhana to ensure the war between Kaurava and Pandava to achieve destruction of the Kuru clan. Does it?

Shakuni does not play any role of significance in the days leading up to the war. In fact Shakuni's son Uluka plays a bigger role than his father, who is chosen by Duryodhana as a messenger to go to Pandava camp. Mahabharata has an entire chapter Ulukadutagaman Parva named after him. 

Now we move closer to the war. Bhishma counts Shakuni as a Rathi. (He was not a limp. That is nowhere mentioned in Mahabharata).

After trying to avoid the war and come up with alternate evil schemes to fulfil his nephew's desire the war was up on Shakuni. He fought for the side of his nephews and the very fact that he survived till the last days says a lot about his survival extinct. He was a decent warrior who knew how to survive in the battle. 

The more shocking part is that all the brothers of Shakuni, who according to the alternative theory popular on social media these days must be all dead, also participate in the Kurukshetra war. 

In fact, his brothers Gavaksha, Sharabha, Vibhu, Subhaga and Bhanudatta die at the hands of Bhimasena.

Shakuni had few notable battles in the Kurukshetra war. On the last day after Shalya's fall Shakuni showed enough courage to rally the Kaurava troops together. However Shakuni was no match for Sahadev, who eventually ended Shakuni's story in a really brutal way. 

The way he fought, he cannot be man with a limp. As mentioned before there is no mention of this in the entire Mahabharata.

शकुनि के चरित्र के बारे में कई गलतफहमियों से बचने के लिए उसके चरित्र के बारे में बहुत गहन अध्ययन की आवश्यकता है। तो यहां हम उस पर एक प्रयास कर रहे हैं।

 महाभारत में स्पष्ट रूप से शकुनि को बुरे वृक्ष दुर्योधन को शाखाओं के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है, जिसकी जड़ धृतराष्ट्र, तना कर्ण और फल दुशासन हैं।

 तो क्या शकुनि महाभारत का खलनायक था? निःसंदेह, बिना किसी संदेह के। स्वयं वेदव्यास ने इस तथ्य को स्पष्ट रूप से प्रमाणित किया है।

 इन सब बातों को ध्यान में रखते हुए, आइए महान महाकाव्य में इस खलनायक की भूमिका के बारे में और जानें।

 गांधारी के विवाह के दौरान हम पहली बार शकुनि के चरित्र से मिलते हैं। अब बहुत से लोग वास्तव में दिलचस्प कहानियाँ बताते हैं कि यह कैसे हुआ।

 धृतराष्ट्र और गांधारी के विवाह वाले अध्याय के अनुसार, शकुनि अपनी बहन को छोड़ने के लिए व्यक्तिगत रूप से हस्तिनापुर आए और कुछ समय के लिए उनके अतिथि के रूप में वहां रहे। इसमें यह भी स्पष्ट उल्लेख है कि भीष्म ने उनका आदरपूर्वक स्वागत किया और उनका सम्मान किया।

 अब आप जानते हैं कि अक्सर शकुनि से जुड़ी नकली सिसकने की कहानी की सच्चाई कितनी है, जो बाद में महाकाव्य में किसी तरह उसके बुरे कार्यों को वैध बनाने का प्रयास करती है। "ओह, लेकिन उसने यह सब इसलिए किया क्योंकि उसके परिवार के साथ ऐसा किया गया था।" महाभारत स्पष्ट रूप से ऐसी किसी भी सिसकने वाली कहानी का समर्थन नहीं करता है। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि महाकाव्य में बाद में उसके कार्यों के पीछे कोई दुखद प्रेरणा नहीं है।

 कई लोगों का दावा है कि शकुनि ने अपने भतीजे दुर्योधन को उसके चचेरे भाइयों के खिलाफ मन में जहर फैलाया था और इसी वजह से भीम को जहर दिया गया। दुर्योधन को ऐसा करने के लिए अपने मामा से किसी प्रेरणा की आवश्यकता नहीं थी। वह अपने आप में अत्यधिक बुराई करने में पूरी तरह सक्षम था।

 बाद में जब युधिष्ठिर को युवराज घोषित किया गया और पांडवों ने हस्तिनापुर की प्रजा के बीच लोकप्रियता पाया गया, तो इससे धृतराष्ट्र को चिंता हुई और उन्होंने कणिका नामक सलाहकार को आमंत्रित किया। कई लोग इस सलाह का श्रेय शकुनि को देते हैं लेकिन कणिका महाकाव्य में एक अलग चरित्र है।

 अब शकुनि की खलनायकी शुरू होती है. वह दुर्योधन, कर्ण और दुशासन के साथ मिलकर वारणावत में पांडवों को जलाने की योजना बनाता है। धृतराष्ट्र ने इस भयावह योजना के लिए आशीर्वाद दिया।

 आगे हम शकुनि से मिलते हैं जब द्रौपदी के विवाह की खबर हस्तिनापुर पहुंचती है। यहां शकुनि अपना वास्तविक रंग दिखाता है और पांडवों को समाप्त करने की सलाह देता है और अपना मामला पेश करता है। वह अपने सभी शक्तिशाली सहयोगियों के साथ खुली लड़ाई में पांडवों का सामना करने से सावधान भी देता है।

यदि उसने कुरु वंश को नष्ट करने की शपथ ली थी और वह एक प्रतिभाशाली मास्टरमाइंड था, तो यह उसकी योजना को क्रियान्वित करने का उचित समय था। लेकिन यहां वह एक उचित विश्लेषण प्रस्तुत करता है और पांडवों पर हमला करने से पहले उनके सहयोगियों के साथ खड़े होने की प्रतीक्षा करने के खिलाफ चेतावनी देता है।

 शकुनि फिर से कहानी में प्रकट होता है जब वह अपने पिता सुबाला के साथ इंद्रप्रस्थ में युधिष्ठिर के राजसूय यज्ञ में भाग ले रहा होता है।

 हाँ, शकुनि के पिता जीवित और स्वस्थ हैं और राजसूय यज्ञ में शाही निमंत्रण पाने के कारण साफ होता है के कुरुओं के साथ उनके अच्छे राजनयिक संबंध हैं।

 यदि कोई संदेह था, तो सुबाला की यहां उपस्थिति स्पष्ट रूप से शकुनि के परिवार को कैद करने, यातना देने और मरने के लिए छोड़ दिए जाने की करुण कहानी का खंडन करती है।

 राजसूय यज्ञ के बाद हस्तिनापुर के रास्ते में दुर्योधन अपने मामा से बात करता है और बताता है कि कैसे वह ईर्ष्या से जल रहा है और अगर उसे युधिष्ठिर को समृद्ध होते देखना है तो वह आत्महत्या कर लेगा।

 शकुनि ने दुर्योधन को ईर्ष्या न करने की सलाह दी। वह दुर्योधन को इस विनाशकारी विचार प्रक्रिया से रोकने के लिए पांडवों के सौभाग्य और उनकी ताकत के बारे में भी बात करता है।

अब आप सभी सोच रहे होंगे कि यह किसी ऐसे व्यक्ति की अच्छी सलाह है जिसे हम पहले ही कहानी के खलनायकों में से एक के रूप में स्थापित कर चुके हैं।

 यही तो बात है। वह खलनायक थे लेकिन उनकी खलनायकी की सीमा को बाद के पुनर्कथनों में बहुत बढ़ा-चढ़ा कर पेश किया गया है।

 खलनायकी वाला भाग उपरोक्त बातचीत के तुरंत बाद आता है जब शकुनि अपने भांजों को द्युत का विचार प्रस्तावित करता है।

ध्यान से पढ़ें तो द्यूत का प्रस्ताव शकुनि ने युद्ध टालने के लिए रखा था। वह स्पष्ट रूप से जानता था कि उसके भांजों के पास खुली लड़ाई में पांडव के विरुद्ध कोई मौका नहीं है और वह उस स्थिति से बचना चाहता था।

 वह नहीं चाहता था कि उसकी बहन के बेटे युद्ध में मरें, इसलिए उसने दुर्योधन की खुशी के लिए अन्य बुरे तरीके अपनाए।

 शकुनि शायद जानता था कि भविष्य में लोग उसके बारे में बेतुकी कहानियाँ बनाएंगे इसलिए उसने अपने भांजों को पासे के खेल में अपनी कुशलता के बारे में स्पष्ट रूप से बताया।

 कोई जादुई पासा नहीं. वह एक माहिर जुआरी था. 

 पासे के निर्माण में किसी भी हड्डी के शामिल होने का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है।

 इसके बाद अगले कुछ अध्याय दुर्योधन द्वारा धृतराष्ट्र को पासे के खेल के लिए मनाने और कैसे उन्होंने इसे चचेरे भाइयों के बीच का मैत्रीपूर्ण खेल बताकर युधिष्ठिर को निमंत्रण स्वीकार करने के लिए बाध्य किया, को समर्पित हैं।

यहां आप देख सकते हैं कि शकुनि लोगों को भ्रमित करने में सक्षम शब्दों में अच्छा था, लेकिन उसने उस कौशल का इस्तेमाल दुर्योधन के फायदे के लिए किया, न कि उसके खिलाफ।

 इसके बाद महाकाव्य का सबसे बुरा हिस्सा और शकुनि का सबसे बड़ा योगदान आता है।

 युधिष्ठिर यह सोचकर खेल के लिए सहमत हुए कि यह उनके और दुर्योधन के बीच बराबरी का खेल होगा लेकिन उन्हें एक विशेषज्ञ जुआरी शकुनि के खिलाफ खड़ा किया गया था।

 ऐसी स्थिति में जैसा कि अपेक्षित था, कमतर खिलाड़ी विश्व स्तरीय खिलाड़ी से हारता रहा।

 खेल में द्रौपदी के जीतने के बाद शकुनि चुपचाप पांडवों और उनकी पत्नी के अपमान का आनंद लेता रहा लेकिन दुर्योधन की ओर से ज्यादातर बातें कर्ण ने कीं।

दुर्योधन अभी भी खुश नहीं था और वह फिर से आत्महत्या करने की बात करता है और प्रस्ताव करता है कि वे निर्वासन के दौरान पांडवों की तलाश करें और उन्हें मार डालें।

 शकुनि ने इसके विरुद्ध सलाह दी।

 घोषयात्रा के दौरान शकुनि फिर से कहानी में प्रवेश करता है, जब वह और कर्ण दुर्योधन के सामने जंगल जाने और अपने दुश्मनों को दुख का जीवन जीते देखने का आनंद लेने का विचार रखते हैं।

 अब दुर्योधन खुद होकर गंधर्वों से युद्ध करने लगता है, जहां कर्ण के नेतृत्व में शकुनि सहित सभी लोग गंधर्वों से लड़ने लगते हैं। बाद में कर्ण सहित दुर्योधन की सेना भाग जाती है और उसे पकड़ लिया जाता है।

 युधिष्ठिर भीम और अर्जुन को दुर्योधन को बचाने का आदेश देते हैं, जो दुर्योधन को बचाने के लिए बाध्य होते हैं।

  इस पर दुर्योधन को इतना अपमानित महसूस हुआ कि उसने (फिर से) आत्महत्या करने का फैसला किया।

 हर कोई दुर्योधन को आत्महत्या न करने के लिए समझाने की कोशिश करता है। शकुनि उससे जो कहता है वह आपके होश उड़ा देगा।

 वह वास्तव में दुर्योधन से पांडवों के प्रति कृतज्ञता दिखाने और राज्य का उनका हिस्सा उन्हें लौटाने के लिए कहता है।

 ऐसा नहीं लगता कि कोई व्यक्ति कुरु वंश के विनाश के लिए कौरवों और पांडवों के बीच युद्ध सुनिश्चित करने के लिए दुर्योधन को उकसा रहा था। क

 युद्ध से पहले के दिनों में शकुनि कोई महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका नहीं निभाता है। वास्तव में शकुनि का पुत्र उलूक अपने पिता से भी बड़ी भूमिका निभाता है, जिसे दुर्योधन ने पांडव शिविर में जाने के लिए दूत के रूप में चुना है। महाभारत में उलूकदुतगमन पर्व का एक पूरा अध्याय उनके नाम पर है।

 अब हम युद्ध के करीब पहुँचते हैं। भीष्म शकुनि को रथी मानते हैं। (वह लंगड़ा नहीं था। इसका उल्लेख महाभारत में कहीं नहीं है)।

युद्ध से बचने की कोशिश करने और अपने भांजों की इच्छा को पूरा करने के लिए वैकल्पिक बुरी योजनाओं के साथ आने के बाद युद्ध शकुनि पर था। उन्होंने अपने भांजों के पक्ष में लड़ाई लड़ी और यह तथ्य कि वह अंतिम दिनों तक जीवित रहे, उनके अस्तित्व के विलुप्त होने के बारे में बहुत कुछ कहता है। वह एक सभ्य योद्धा था जो जानता था कि युद्ध में कैसे जीवित रहना है।

 इससे भी अधिक चौंकाने वाली बात यह है कि शकुनि के सभी भाई, जो इन दिनों सोशल मीडिया पर प्रचलित वैकल्पिक सिद्धांत के अनुसार सभी मर चुके होंगे, ने भी कुरुक्षेत्र युद्ध में भाग लिया था।

 दरअसल, भीमसेन के हाथों उनके भाई गवाक्ष, शरभ, विभु, सुभग और भानुदत्त की मृत्यु हो जाती है।

 कुरुक्षेत्र युद्ध में शकुनि की कुछ उल्लेखनीय लड़ाइयाँ थीं। शल्य के पतन के बाद आखिरी दिन शकुनि ने कौरव सैनिकों को एक साथ लाने के लिए पर्याप्त साहस दिखाया। हालाँकि, शकुनि का सहदेव से कोई मुकाबला नहीं था, जिसने अंततः शकुनि की कहानी को बहुत क्रूर तरीके से समाप्त कर दिया।

 जिस तरह से उसने संघर्ष किया, वह लंगड़ाकर चलने वाला आदमी नहीं हो सकता। जैसा कि पहले बताया गया है, संपूर्ण महाभारत में इसका कोई उल्लेख नहीं है।
