Stories of Chadravamsha - The First of the Chandravamshis - Story of Pururava and Urvashi by Sutradhar
After Sudyumna, Ila and Budha's son Pururava became the king. He was an illustrious king who was famous even among the gods. Apsara Urvashi had heard about his fame and was infatuated with him.
Once Urvashi with her friend Chitralekha was visiting earth and she got kidnapped by an asura named Keshi. Pururava heard Chitralekha's screaming and came for the rescue. Pururava chased Keshi and rescued Urvashi.
After this encounter both Uravshi and Pururava were smitten by each other.
Once during a performance in Indraloka directed by Bharat Muni, Urvashi, who was playing the role of Devi Lakshmi mentioned Pururava's name instead of Narayana. This angered Bharat Muni, who cursed her to live with this human whom she was so smitten by and bear children with him.
This curse felt like a boon to Urvashi, who was too happy to get a chance to spend time with Pururava. However she always knew that one day she would have to leave him and return to heaven, so before agreeing to their union she presented her conditions to Pururava.
Urvashi's first condition was that Pururava would take care of and protect Urvashi's pet sheep she brought with her. Her second condition was that she should not see Pururava naked outside their bedroom.
Many years passed and gods in the heaven started missing Urvashi. They wanted her to return. So they played a trick. One night while Pururava and Urvashi were in their bedroom, Gandharvas stole Urvashi's sheep. Hearing their sound Pururava rushed to protect them, without bothering to dress up. Urvashi followed Pururava outside their bedroom and as soon as they both were out, Indra caused lightening thus making him break Urvashi's conditions.
With her conditions broken now, Urvashi decided to leave Pururava and retrun to heaven. Pururava was heartbroken and decided to convince Urvashi to stay but she did not. Later she returned with their son Ayu, who became the king after Pururava and carried the legacy of Chandravansha forward after Pururava departed to heaven.

कट गया वर्ष ऐसे जैसे दो निमिष गए
प्रिय! छोड़ गन्धमादन को अब जाना होगा,
इस भूमि-स्वर्ग के हरे-भरे, शीतल वन में
जानें, कब राजपुरी से फिर आना होगा!
कितना अपार सुख था, बैठे चट्टानॉ पर
हम साथ-साथ झरनॉ में पाँव भिगोते थे,
तरु-तले परस्पर बाँहों को उपधान बना
हम किस प्रकार निश्चिंत छाँह में सोते थे!
जाने से पहले चलो, आज जी खोल मिलें
निर्झरी, लता, फूलॉ की डाली-डाली से,
पी लें जी भर पर्वत पर का नीरव प्रकाश,
लें सींच हृदय झूमती हुई हरियाली से.

सुद्युम्न के बाद इला और बुध के पुत्र पुरुरवा राजा बने। वे एक शानदार राजा थे जो देवताओं में भी प्रसिद्ध थे। अप्सरा उर्वशी ने उनकी प्रसिद्धि के बारे में सुना और उन पर मोहित हो गईं।
एक बार उर्वशी अपनी सहेली चित्रलेखा के साथ पृथ्वी पर घूम रही थी और उसे केशी नामक एक असुर ने अपहरण कर लिया। पुरुरवा ने चित्रलेखा की चीख सुनी और उसे बचाने के लिए आया। पुरुरवा ने केशी का पीछा किया और उर्वशी को बचाया।
इस मुठभेड़ के बाद उर्वशी और पुरुरवा दोनों एक-दूसरे पर मोहित हो गए।
एक बार भरत मुनि द्वारा निर्देशित इंद्रलोक में एक प्रदर्शन के दौरान, देवी लक्ष्मी की भूमिका निभा रही उर्वशी ने नारायण के बजाय पुरुरवा का नाम लिया। इससे भरत मुनि क्रोधित हो गए, और उन्होंने उसे उस मनुष्य के साथ रहने का श्राप दे दिया, जिस पर वह बहुत मोहित थी और जिससे उसे संतान पैदा करने का श्राप दिया।
यह श्राप उर्वशी के लिए वरदान की तरह लगा, जो पुरुरवा के साथ समय बिताने का मौका पाकर बहुत खुश थी। हालाँकि वह हमेशा जानती थी कि एक दिन उसे उसे छोड़कर स्वर्ग लौटना होगा, इसलिए उनके मिलन पर सहमत होने से पहले उसने पुरुरवा के सामने अपनी शर्तें रखीं।
उर्वशी की पहली शर्त यह थी कि पुरुरवा उर्वशी की पालतू भेड़ों की देखभाल और सुरक्षा करेगा, जिन्हें वह अपने साथ लाई थी। उसकी दूसरी शर्त यह थी कि वह पुरुरवा को उनके शयनकक्ष के बाहर नग्न न देखे।
कई साल बीत गए और स्वर्ग में देवताओं को उर्वशी की याद आने लगी। वे चाहते थे कि वह वापस आ जाए। इसलिए उन्होंने एक चाल चली। एक रात जब पुरुरवा और उर्वशी अपने शयनकक्ष में थे, गंधर्वों ने उर्वशी की भेड़ें चुरा लीं। उनकी आवाज़ सुनकर पुरुरवा बिना कपड़े पहने ही उनकी रक्षा करने के लिए दौड़ पड़े। उर्वशी पुरुरवा का पीछा करते हुए उनके शयन कक्ष के बाहर चली गई और जैसे ही वे दोनों बाहर निकले, इंद्र ने बिजली गिराई जिससे उर्वशी की शर्तें टूट गईं।
अब अपनी शर्तें टूट जाने के बाद, उर्वशी ने पुरुरवा को छोड़कर स्वर्ग वापस जाने का फैसला किया। पुरुरवा का दिल टूट गया और उसने उर्वशी को वहीं रहने के लिए मनाने का फैसला किया, लेकिन वह नहीं मानी। बाद में वह अपने बेटे आयु के साथ लौटी, जो पुरुरवा के बाद राजा बना और पुरुरवा के स्वर्ग चले जाने के बाद चंद्रवंश की विरासत को आगे बढ़ाया।
