बालक मार्कण्डेयको शिवकृपानुभूति
महामुनि मृकण्डुके कोई संतान नहीं थी। इसके लिये उन्होंने पत्नीसहित कठोर तप करके भगवान् शंकरको संतुष्ट किया। प्रसन्न होकर भगवान् शंकर प्रकट हुए और उन्होंने कहा कि 'तुमको पुत्रकी प्राप्ति तो होगी; पर यदि गुणवान्, यशस्वी, सर्वज्ञ, परम धार्मिक और ज्ञानका समुद्र पुत्र चाहते हो तो उसकी आयु केवल सोलह वर्षकी होगी और उत्तम गुणोंसे हीन पुत्र चाहते हो तो वह चिरंजीवी होगा।' इसपर धर्मात्मा मृकण्डु मुनिने कहा-'मैं गुणहीन पुत्र नहीं चाहता। आयु चाहे छोटी हो, मुझे तो गुणसम्पन्न ही पुत्र चाहिये।' भगवान् शंकर 'तथास्तु' कहकर अन्तर्धान हो गये।
भगवान् शंकरके वरदानके अनुसार मृकण्डुमुनिकीध र्मपत्नी मरुद्वती गर्भवती हुई। समयपर बालकका जन्म हुआ। बालक बड़ा ही तेजस्वी और सुन्दर था। समय समयपर मुनि मृकण्डु बालकके यथाविधि संस्कार करते रहे। उसने यज्ञोपवीत लेकर अंग-उपांग, पद और क्रमसहित सम्पूर्ण वेदोंका अध्ययन किया। वह बड़ा शीलवान् तथा गुणी था और माता-पिताकी सेवामें संलग्न रहता था। इस प्रकार बुद्धिमान् मार्कण्डेयकी आयुका सोलहवाँ वर्ष जब आरम्भ हुआ, तब भगवान् शंकरकी बात याद करके मुनि मृकण्डु अत्यन्त व्याकुल हो गये। मार्कण्डेयके पूछनेपर मृकण्डुने कहा- 'बेटा! भगवान् शंकरने तुमको सोलह वर्षकी ही आयु दी है। उसकी समाप्तिका काल समीप आ पहुँचा है, इसीलिये मैं शोकाकुल हूँ।' पिताके वचन सुनकर बड़े धैर्यके साथ मार्कण्डेयने कहा- 'पिताजी! आप तनिक भी शोच न करें। मैं मृत्युंजय आशुतोष कल्याणस्वरूप भगवान् शंकरकी उपासना करके उनको प्रसन्न करूँगा और मैं अमर होऊँगा।' पुत्रकी बात सुनकर माता-पिताको बड़ा हर्ष हुआ और उन्होंने उसके प्रस्तावका समर्थन करते हुए कहा- 'भगवान् शिव ब्रह्मा आदि देवताओंके एकमात्र कर्ता, नित्य अपनी महिमामें स्थित, सम्पूर्ण विश्वके आश्रय और जगत्की रक्षा करनेवाले हैं। बेटा! तुम उन्हींकी शरणमें जाओ।'
माता-पिताकी आज्ञा पाकर मार्कण्डेयजी दक्षिण समुद्रके तटपर चले गये और विधिपूर्वक अपने ही नामसे (मार्कण्डेयेश्वर) शिवलिंगकी स्थापना करके पूजा करने लगे। पूजाके अन्तमें वे भगवान् शंकरके 'मृत्युंजय' स्तवनका पाठ करके नृत्य करते थे। उस स्तोत्रसे भगवान् शंकर संतुष्ट हो गये। सोलहवें वर्षका अन्तिम दिन आ गया। मृत्युको साथ लिये बड़े विकरालरूपमें कालदेवता प्रकट हुए और वे मार्कण्डेयके प्राण-हरण करनेको उद्यत हुए। मार्कण्डेयने कहा- 'महामते काल! जबतक मैं भगवान् शंकरके 'मृत्युंजय' नामक महास्तोत्रका पाठ पूरा न कर लूँ, तबतक तुम प्रतीक्षा करो। यदि मैंने कोई असत्य बात न कही हो तो इस सत्यके प्रभावसे भगवान् महेश्वर मुझपर प्रसन्न रहें।'
कालने हँसकर मार्कण्डेयकी बातको उड़ा दिया और अन्तमें क्रोधमें भरकर कहा-'अरे दुर्बुद्धि ब्राह्मण ! गंगाजीमें जितने रजकण हैं, उतने ब्रह्माओंका इस कालने संहार कर डाला है। मेरा बल और पराक्रम देखो। मैं तुम्हें अभी अपना ग्रास बनाता हूँ। तुम इस समय जिनके दास बने बैठे हो, देखता हूँ, वे तुम्हारी रक्षा कैसे करते हैं?'
जैसे राहु चन्द्रमाको ग्रस लेता है, वैसे ही गर्जना करते हुए कालने हठपूर्वक मार्कण्डेयको ग्रसना आरम्भ किया। इसी बीच परमेश्वर भगवान् शंकर उस लिंगसे सहसा प्रकट हो गये। उन्होंने हुंकार भरकर मेघके समान प्रचण्ड गर्जना करते हुए तुरंत ही कालदेवताकी छातीमें लात मारी और त्रिशूल चलानेको तैयार हो गये। उनके चरण-प्रहारसे भयभीत होकर काल दूर जा पड़े और इस प्रकार भयंकर आकारवाले कालको दूर पड़े देखकर मार्कण्डेयने पुनः उस मृत्युंजय स्तोत्रसे भगवान् शंकरका स्तवन किया।
स्तोत्रके समाप्त होनेपर भगवान् महादेवजोंने मार्कण्डेयको कल्पोंतककी असीम आयु प्रदान की। वे सचमुच अमरत्वको प्राप्त हो गये। तदनन्तर उन्होंने आश्रममें लौटकर अपने माता-पिताको प्रणाम किया और उन्होंने भी पुत्रका अभिनन्दन करके उसे आशीर्वाद दिया।
वसिष्ठजी कहते हैं कि मार्कण्डेयजीके द्वा रचित इस स्तोत्र का भगवान् शंकरके समोग विश्वासपूर्वक जो पाठ करेगा, उसे मृत्युका भय नहीं होगा- यह मैं सत्य-सत्य कहता हूँ।
Child Markandeya receives the blessings of Lord Shiva
Mahamuni Mrikandu did not have any child. For this, he, along with his wife, performed severe penance and satisfied Lord Shiva. Pleased, Lord Shiva appeared and said, "You will get a son; but if you want a son who is virtuous, famous, omniscient, extremely religious and an ocean of knowledge, then his lifespan will be only sixteen years and if you want a son devoid of good qualities, then he will live forever." On this, the virtuous sage Mrikandu said, "I do not want a son without qualities. Even if his lifespan is short, I want a son with good qualities." Lord Shiva said, "So be it," and disappeared.
As per the blessings of Lord Shiva, Mrikandu's wife Marudvati became pregnant. The child was born on time. The child was very radiant and beautiful. From time to time, sage Mrikandu kept performing the rituals of the child as per the rituals. He took the sacred thread and studied the Vedas in all its parts, parts, verses and sequences. He was very virtuous and talented and always remained engaged in serving his parents. Thus, when the sixteenth year of the intelligent Markandeya's life began, remembering the words of Lord Shankar, sage Mrikand became very anxious. On Markandeya's question, Mrikandu said- 'Son! Lord Shankar has given you only sixteen years of life. Its end is near, that is why I am in grief.' On hearing his father's words, Markandeya said with great patience- 'Father! Do not worry at all. I will worship Mrityunjay Ashutosh auspicious Lord Shankar and please him and I will become immortal.' The parents were very happy to hear their son's words and supporting his proposal, they said, 'Lord Shiva is the only creator of gods like Brahma, who is always situated in his glory, the shelter of the entire universe and the protector of the world. Son! You should seek refuge in Him.'
After getting the permission of his parents, Markandey went to the shore of the South Ocean and established a Shivalinga in his own name (Markandeyeshwar) and started worshipping it. At the end of the worship, he used to dance after reciting the 'Mrityunjaya' hymn of Lord Shankar. Lord Shankar was pleased with that hymn. The last day of the sixteenth year came. The god of death appeared in a very fierce form with death and prepared to take Markandey's life. Markandey said- 'O great Kaal! You wait till I complete the recitation of the great hymn of Lord Shankar named 'Mrityunjaya'. If I have not said anything untrue, then Lord Maheshwar should remain pleased with me due to the effect of this truth.'
Kal laughed and dismissed Markandey's words and finally said angrily- 'Oh foolish Brahmin! This Kaal has killed as many Brahmins as there are dust particles in the Ganges. See my strength and valour. I will make you my prey right now. Let me see how he saves you whose slave you are sitting as this moment protect you.'
Roaring like Rahu swallows the moon, Kaal stubbornly started to swallow Markandeya. Meanwhile, the Supreme Lord Shankar suddenly appeared from that Linga. Roaring like a cloud, he immediately kicked Kaaldevta in the chest and got ready to use his trident. Frightened by the blow of his feet, Kaal went away and seeing the fearsome Kaal lying far away, Markandeya again praised Lord Shankar with that Mrityunjay Stotra.
On completion of the stotra, Lord Mahadev granted Markandeya an unlimited lifespan of kalpas. He truly attained immortality. Thereafter, he returned to the ashram and bowed to his parents and they too greeted their son and blessed him.
Vashishtha says that whoever recites this stotra composed by Markandeya with complete faith in Lord Shankar, will not have to fear death - I am saying this truthfully.
