Did Yudhisthira tell Arjuna to become King instead of himself after the Mahabharata War?

After knowing that Vaikartana Karna was his older brother, King Yudhisthira was filled with guilt for being the reason of the destruction of the Kuru dynasty and wanted to renounce his position as the King.

King Yudhisthira himself told Arjuna to rule over the earth during his absence.

In Kisari Mohan Ganguli's Mahabharat 

The Srutis declare that he that practises renunciation escapes from birth and death, and obtaining the right road, that person of fixed soul attains to Brahma. I shall, therefore, O Dhananjaya, go to the woods, with your leave, O scorcher of foes, disregarding all the pairs of opposites, adopting the vow of taciturnity, and walking in the way pointed out by knowledge. O slayer of foes, the Srutis declare it and I myself have seen it with my eyes, that one who is wedded to this earth can never obtain every kind Of religious merit. 

Desirous of obtaining the things of this earth, I have committed sin, through which, as the Srutis declare, birth and death are brought about. Abandoning the whole of my kingdom, therefore, and the things of this earth, I shall go to the woods, escaping from the ties of the world, freed from grief, and without affection for anything. 

Do thou govern this earth, on which peace has been restored, and which has been divested of all its thorns. O best of Kuru's race, I have no need for kingdom or for pleasure.'

Santi Parva: Rajadharmanusasana Parva: Section VII

In Bori Critical Edition of the Mahabharat 

O Dhananjaya! He attains the knowledge of the sages and is without any sense of opposites. O scorcher of enemies! I will take my leave from all of you and go to the forest. O destroyer of enemies! The sacred texts say that someone with possessions is not capable of attaining the best forms of dharma. I can see that. Because I desired possessions, I committed wicked acts and the sacred texts say that this can cause birth and death. I will give up my possessions and the entire kingdom. I will depart, completely free, bereft of sorrow and devoid of fever. With the thorns having been removed, you rule over this pacified earth. O best of the Kuru lineage! This kingdom and the pleasures are not for me.”

Santi Parva: Chapter 1335(7)

Suprisingly, King Yudhishthira did not mention his other brother, Bhimasena to rule over the kingdom. 

This could be because Yudhishthira was well-aware of the qualities of Arjuna and found him most worthy for the throne.

This could also be due to the calm minded attitude of Arjuna which was in contrast to Bhima’s hot headed attitude.

 श्रुतियों का कथन है कि जो व्यक्ति त्याग का आचरण करता है, वह जन्म और मृत्यु से बच जाता है और सही मार्ग प्राप्त करके स्थिर आत्मा वाला व्यक्ति ब्रह्म को प्राप्त कर लेता है। इसलिए, हे धनंजय, मैं आपकी अनुमति से जंगल में जाऊंगा, हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले, सभी विरोधाभासों की उपेक्षा करते हुए, मौन व्रत अपनाऊंगा और ज्ञान द्वारा बताए गए मार्ग पर चलूंगा। हे शत्रुओं के संहारक, श्रुतियाँ इसकी घोषणा करती हैं और मैंने स्वयं अपनी आँखों से देखा है कि जो इस पृथ्वी पर विवाहित है, वह कभी भी सभी प्रकार के धार्मिक गुणों को प्राप्त नहीं कर सकता है।

 इस पृथ्वी की वस्तुओं को प्राप्त करने की इच्छा से मैंने पाप किया है, जिसके माध्यम से, जैसा कि श्रुतियों का कथन है, जन्म और मृत्यु होती है। इसलिए, मैं अपने पूरे राज्य और इस पृथ्वी की चीजों को त्याग कर, संसार के बंधनों से बचकर, शोक से मुक्त होकर और किसी भी चीज़ के प्रति स्नेह रहित होकर, जंगल में चला जाऊंगा।

 क्या आप इस पृथ्वी पर शासन करते हैं, जिस पर शांति बहाल हो गई है, और जिसने इसके सभी कांटों को हटा दिया है। हे कुरुवंश श्रेष्ठ, मुझे राज्य या सुख की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है।'

 महाभारत के बोरी आलोचनात्मक संस्करण में

 हे धनंजय! वह ऋषियों का ज्ञान प्राप्त कर लेता है और विरोध की भावना से रहित हो जाता है। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! मैं आप सभी से विदा लेकर वन में जाऊंगा। हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! पवित्र ग्रंथ कहते हैं कि संपत्ति वाला कोई व्यक्ति धर्म के सर्वोत्तम रूपों को प्राप्त करने में सक्षम नहीं है। मैं देख सकता हूँ कि। क्योंकि मैंने संपत्ति की इच्छा की, मैंने दुष्ट कार्य किए और पवित्र ग्रंथों में कहा गया है कि इससे जन्म और मृत्यु हो सकती है। मैं अपनी संपत्ति और पूरा राज्य छोड़ दूंगा। मैं पूर्णतः मुक्त होकर, दुःख से रहित और ज्वर से रहित होकर चला जाऊँगा। काँटों को हटाकर आप इस शांत पृथ्वी पर शासन करें। हे कुरु वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! यह राज्य और सुख मेरे लिये नहीं हैं।”

 शांति पर्व: अध्याय 1335(7)

 आश्चर्यजनक रूप से, राजा युधिष्ठिर ने अपने दूसरे भाई भीमसेन को राज्य पर शासन करने का उल्लेख नहीं किया।

 ऐसा इसलिए हो सकता है क्योंकि युधिष्ठिर अर्जुन के गुणों से अच्छी तरह परिचित थे और उन्हें सिंहासन के लिए सबसे योग्य मानते थे।

 यह अर्जुन के शांतचित्त रवैये के कारण भी हो सकता है जो भीम के क्रोधी रवैये के विपरीत था।
