देश में गोंड राजवंश की महानतम रानी दुर्गावती को उनके साहस और बलिदान के लिए याद किया जाता है. उन्होंने मुगल सेना से अपनी मातृभूमि और आत्मसम्मान की रक्षा हेतु अपने जान की कुर्बानी दी थी. उनके बलिदन के किस्से आज भी लोगों के मन में ताजा हैं. लोग उनकी तुलना महाराणा प्रताप से भी करते हैं.

उनका जन्म दुर्गाष्टमी के दिन हुआ. इसलिए उन्हें दुर्गावती नाम दिया गया. दुर्गावती के पिता कालिंजर के राजा कीर्तिसिंह चंदेल थे और वह अपने पिता की इकलौती संतान थीं.

रानी दुर्गावती का विवाह गोंडवाना राज्य के राजा संग्राम शाह के बेटे दलपत शाह से हुआ. शादी के चार साल बाद ही राजा दलपत शाह ने दुनिया को अलविदा कह दिया. अब दुर्गावती अपने तीन साल के बेटे के साथ ही अकेले रह गई थीं. फिर उन्होंने राज्य की बांगडोर अपने हाथ में ली. वर्तमान जबलपुर उनके राज्य का केंद्र था.

शेरशाह की मृत्यु के बाद, सुजात खान ने मालवा क्षेत्र पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया और 1556 ई. में उनके बेटे बाज बहादुर ने उनका उत्तराधिकारी बना लिया। सिंहासन पर बैठने के बाद, उन्होंने रानी दुर्गावती पर हमला किया, लेकिन हमले में उनकी सेना को भारी नुकसान हुआ। इस हार ने प्रभावी रूप से बाज बहादुर को खामोश कर दिया और इस जीत ने रानी दुर्गावती को नाम और प्रसिद्धि दिलाई।

1562 में अकबर की मुगल सेना ने गोंडवाना पर हमला किया. रानी दुर्गावती के पास सैनिकों की संख्या कम थी. मगर उन्होंने युद्ध जारी रखना चुना. युद्ध की शुरुआत में ही रानी दुर्गावती के सेनापति को वीरगति मिली. लेकिन उन्होंने अपना हौसला टूटने नहीं दिया. ये देखकर मुगल भी हैरान रह गए.

पहले दिन मुंह की खाने के बाद अगले दिन मुगल अत्यधिक सैनिकों के साथ पहुंचे. रानी दुर्गावती अपने सफेद हाथी पर सवार होकर मुगलों से लड़ रही थीं. इस युद्ध में उनका बेटा भी घायल हो गया, जिसे उन्होंने सुरक्षित स्थान पर भेजा. अब उनके पास 300 सैनिक ही बचे हुए थे, जबकि वह बुरी तरह घायल हो गई थीं.

रानी दुर्गावती को घायल अवस्था में देखकर उनके सैनिकों ने उन्हें जान बचाने को कहा. लेकिन उन्होंने पीछे नहीं हटने का फैसला किया. युद्ध जारी रहा और अब उनके सैनिक मारे जा रहे थे. ये देखकर रानी दुर्गावती को लगा कि अब वह युद्ध को नहीं लड़ पाएंगी.

रानी दुर्गावती ने अपने दीवान आधार सिंह को कहा कि वह उनकी जान ले लें. मगर दीवान को लगा कि वह अपने मालिक को नहीं मार सकता है. ये देखकर रानी दुर्गावती ने अपनी कटार उठाई और उसे सीने में उतार लिया. इस तरह वह मुगलों से लड़ते-लड़ते दुनिया को अलविदा कहकर चली गईं.

रानी दुर्गावती का व्यक्तित्व विविध पहलुओं वाला था। वह बहादुर, सुंदर और साहसी होने के साथ-साथ प्रशासनिक कौशल वाली एक महान नेता भी थीं। उसके स्वाभिमान ने उसे अपने दुश्मन के सामने आत्मसमर्पण करने के बजाय मृत्यु तक लड़ने के लिए मजबूर किया।

Durgavati, the greatest queen of the Gond dynasty, is remembered in the country for her courage and sacrifice. He sacrificed his life to protect his motherland and self-respect from the Mughal army. The stories of his sacrifice are still fresh in the minds of people. People also compare her with Maharana Pratap.

She was born on the day of Durgashtami. That's why she was named Durgavati. Durgavati's father was King Kirtisingh Chandela of Kalinjar and she was the only child of her father.

Rani Durgavati was married to Dalpat Shah, son of King Sangram Shah of Gondwana state. Only after four years of marriage, Raja Dalpat Shah said goodbye to the world. Now Durgavati was left alone with her three year old son. Then he took the reins of the state in his hands. Present Jabalpur was the center of her kingdom.

After Sher Shah's death, Sujat Khan captured the Malwa region and was succeeded by his son Baz Bahadur in 1556 AD. After ascending the throne, he attacked Queen Durgavati, but his army suffered heavy losses in the attack. This defeat effectively silenced Baz Bahadur and this victory brought name and fame to Rani Durgavati.

In 1562, Akbar's Mughal army attacked Gondwana. Rani Durgavati had less number of soldiers. But he chose to continue the war. Queen Durgavati's commander was martyred at the beginning of the war. But she did not let her courage break. Even the Mughals were surprised to see this.

After suffering a loss on the first day, the Mughals arrived with heavy troops the next day. Queen Durgavati was fighting the Mughals riding on her white elephant. His son also got injured in this war, and was sent to a safe place. Now they had only 300 soldiers left, while she was badly injured.

Seeing Queen Durgavati in injured condition, her soldiers asked her to save her life. But she decided not to back down. The war continued and now their soldiers were being killed. Seeing this, Queen Durgavati felt that now she would not be able to fight the war.

Rani Durgavati asked her Diwan Aadhar Singh to take her life. But the Diwan felt that he could not kill his master. Seeing this, Queen Durgavati picked up her dagger and plunged it into her chest. In this way, she said goodbye to the world while fighting the Mughals.

Rani Durgavati's personality had diverse aspects. She was brave, beautiful and courageous as well as a great leader with administrative skills. Her self-respect forced her to fight to the death rather than surrender to her enemy.
