Worship of Maa Mahagauri
The eighth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Mahagauri. The word Maha means great and the word Gauri means radiant or fair, hence the name Mahagauri
History and Origin
A long time ago, Lord Shiva went into deep penance and meditation due to the death of his first companion - Devi Sati. Lord Shiva refused to come out of his meditation and stayed away from all worldly affairs for many years.
Meanwhile, a demon by the name of Tarakasura was troubling the Gods to no end. At the request of the Gods, Devi Sati was reborn as Maa Shailaputri, the daughter of the Himalayas. She was also called as Maa Parvati.
It was said that she would bring Lord Shiva out of his meditation and their child would go on kill Tarakasura. One day, Sage Narada arrived at Maa Parvati’s doorstep and told her everything about her previous birth.
He also told her that she would have to perform severe Tapasya (penance), so that Lord Shiva can know her truth. Maa Parvati agreed and gave up all the comforts and luxuries of her palace. Soon, she went into a forest and began her dedicated penance.
Thousands of years passed but Maa Parvati did not give up. She refused to eat or drink anything, while also fighting through the cold, the rains and the storms. Due to this, her skin turned dark and her body was now covered with dust, soil, leaves, etc.
She turned extremely pale and thin. Due to this severe Tapasya, Maa Parvati lost all her radiance and became extremely weak. Finally, after a long time, Lord Shiva took notice of her penance. He even tested her devotion and realized that she was indeed his Sati, from the previous birth.
Lord Shiva agreed to marry Maa Parvati. Since, she had become weak and was covered in all kinds of dirt, Lord Shiva decided to cleanse her. He allowed the holy waters of Ganga flowing through his hair, to fall onto Maa Parvati. This sacred water washed away all the dirt from Maa Parvati’s body and she was able to regain her lost radiance.
Due to her glow and extreme radiance, Maa Parvati came to be known as Mahagauri. She wears white clothes, rides a white-coloured bull and has four arms. She holds a Trishul (trident), a lotus and a drum in each of her hands, while she uses her fourth hand to bless all her devotees.
Maa Mahagauri represents the purity and inner beauty of every living being. She is a loving Goddess who takes care of her devotees and helps them overcome their difficulties as well.
मां महागौरी की पूजा
नवरात्रि का आठवां दिन मां महागौरी की पूजा के लिए समर्पित है। महा शब्द का अर्थ है महान और गौरी शब्द का अर्थ है उज्ज्वल या गोरा, इसलिए इसका नाम महागौरी है
इतिहास और उत्पत्ति
बहुत समय पहले, भगवान शिव अपनी पहली साथी - देवी सती की मृत्यु के कारण गहरी तपस्या और ध्यान में चले गए थे। भगवान शिव ने अपने ध्यान से बाहर आने से इनकार कर दिया और कई वर्षों तक सभी सांसारिक मामलों से दूर रहे।
इस बीच, तारकासुर नाम का एक राक्षस देवताओं को बेहद परेशान कर रहा था। देवताओं के अनुरोध पर, देवी सती ने हिमालय की बेटी माँ शैलपुत्री के रूप में पुनर्जन्म लिया। उन्हें माँ पार्वती भी कहा जाता था।
ऐसा कहा गया था कि वह भगवान शिव को उनके ध्यान से बाहर ले आएंगी और उनका बच्चा तारकासुर का वध करेगा। एक दिन, ऋषि नारद माँ पार्वती के दरवाजे पर पहुंचे और उन्हें उनके पिछले जन्म के बारे में सब कुछ बताया।
उन्होंने उससे यह भी कहा कि उसे कठोर तपस्या करनी होगी, ताकि भगवान शिव उसकी सच्चाई जान सकें। माँ पार्वती सहमत हो गईं और उन्होंने अपने महल की सभी सुख-सुविधाएँ त्याग दीं। जल्द ही, वह एक जंगल में चली गई और अपनी समर्पित तपस्या शुरू कर दी।
हजारों वर्ष बीत गए लेकिन मां पार्वती ने हार नहीं मानी। उसने कुछ भी खाने या पीने से इनकार कर दिया, जबकि वह ठंड, बारिश और तूफान से भी लड़ रही थी। इसके कारण उसकी त्वचा काली पड़ गई और उसका शरीर अब धूल, मिट्टी, पत्तियों आदि से ढक गया।
वह बेहद पीली और पतली हो गई। इस कठोर तपस्या के कारण माँ पार्वती अपना सारा तेज खो बैठीं और अत्यंत कमज़ोर हो गईं। अंततः काफी समय के बाद भगवान शिव ने उनकी तपस्या पर ध्यान दिया। उन्होंने उसकी भक्ति की भी परीक्षा ली और महसूस किया कि वह वास्तव में पिछले जन्म से उसकी सती थी।
भगवान शिव माँ पार्वती से विवाह करने के लिए सहमत हो गये। चूंकि, वह कमजोर हो गई थी और सभी प्रकार की गंदगी से ढकी हुई थी, भगवान शिव ने उसे साफ करने का फैसला किया। उन्होंने अपनी जटाओं से बहते हुए गंगा के पवित्र जल को माँ पार्वती पर गिरने दिया। इस पवित्र जल से मां पार्वती के शरीर की सारी गंदगी साफ हो गई और वह अपनी खोई हुई चमक वापस पाने में सक्षम हो गईं।
अपने तेज और अत्यधिक तेज के कारण मां पार्वती को महागौरी के नाम से जाना जाने लगा। वह सफेद कपड़े पहनती हैं, सफेद रंग के बैल की सवारी करती हैं और उनकी चार भुजाएं हैं। वह अपने प्रत्येक हाथ में एक त्रिशूल (त्रिशूल), एक कमल और एक ड्रम रखती है, जबकि वह अपने सभी भक्तों को आशीर्वाद देने के लिए अपने चौथे हाथ का उपयोग करती है।
माँ महागौरी प्रत्येक प्राणी की पवित्रता और आंतरिक सुंदरता का प्रतिनिधित्व करती हैं। वह एक प्रेममयी देवी हैं जो अपने भक्तों का ख्याल रखती हैं और उनकी कठिनाइयों को दूर करने में भी उनकी मदद करती हैं।
