दानवीर मुद्गला - जिन्होंने स्वर्ग जाने से इंकार कर दिया

 महाभारत में हम बहुत सारी उपकथाएँ या कहानियाँ देखते हैं जिनका मुख्य कहानी से कोई सीधा संबंध नहीं है। इनमें से एक मुद्गला की कहानी है, जो दानवीर उपाधि के लिए एक अच्छा उम्मीदवार प्रतीत होता है।

 मुद्गला एक तपस्वी व्यक्ति थे, जो भिक्षा के रूप में जो भी इकट्ठा करते थे वही खाते थे। अपनी पत्नी और बच्चों के साथ, यह ब्राह्मण कुरुक्षेत्र में खुशी से रहता था। वह उन सभी को जो उसके पास होता था, आतिथ्य सत्कार के लिए आता था, दे देता था।

 एक बार दुर्वासा उनके घर आये, वे निर्वस्त्र थे, उनका सिर गंजा था और वे किसी पागल आदमी की तरह लग रहे थे। मुद्गला ने उनका उसी तरह स्वागत किया जैसे उन्होंने सभी का किया था, और उन्हें वह भोजन दिया जो उन्होंने उस दिन एकत्र किया था। दुर्वासा ने सब कुछ खा लिया, बचा हुआ भोजन अपने शरीर पर लगाया और चले गए।

 एक क्षण भी पछतावे या क्रोध के बिना, मुदगला भोजन इकट्ठा करने के लिए फिर से बाहर चली गई। दुर्वासा ने छह अलग-अलग मौकों पर यही काम किया, हर बार उन्होंने इकट्ठा किया हुआ सारा भोजन खा लिया। हर बार, मुदगला बिना किसी क्रोध या निराशा के धैर्यपूर्वक शांति से अपना और अपने परिवार का पेट भरने के लिए फिर से भोजन इकट्ठा करने के लिए बाहर जाता था।

 अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर दुर्वासा ने उनकी अद्वितीय उदारता के लिए उन्हें स्वर्ग प्रदान किया। लेकिन मुद्गल ने स्वर्ग से इनकार कर दिया और मोक्ष पाने के योग्य होने तक पृथ्वी पर अपना जीवन जारी रखने का विकल्प चुना।

 इस प्रकार, ब्राह्मण एक ऐसा व्यक्ति था जिसने निःस्वार्थ भाव से अपना सब कुछ अर्पित कर दिया, भले ही इसका मतलब यह हुआ कि उसने और उसके परिवार ने अपना सारा भोजन त्याग दिया और उसने बदले में कुछ पाने की उम्मीद किए बिना ऐसा किया। सचमुच, यह उदारता का प्रतीक है जिसके कारण उन्हें दानवीर की उपाधि मिलनी चाहिए।

Daanveer Mudgala - who refused to go to heaven- 

In the Mahabharata we see plenty of upakathas or stories that are not directly relevant to the main story. One of these is the tale of Mudgala, who seems to be a good candidate for the Daanveer title.

Mudgala was an austere man, who would eat only what he had collected as Bhiksha. Along with his wife and children, this brahmana lived happily at Kurukshetra. He would give what he had to all those who came to his house seeking hospitality.

Once Durvasa turned up at his house, unclothed, his head bald, looking like a crazed man. Mudgala welcomed him as he did everyone, and offered him the food that he had collected that day. Durvasa ate it all up, smeared the leftovers on his body and walked away.

Without a moment's regret or anger, Mudgala simply went out again to collect food. Durvasa did the same thing on 6 separate occasions, each time, eating up all the food collected. Each time, Mudgala would patiently serenely go out to collect food again to feed himself and his family with not a trace of anger or frustration.

A very pleased Durvasa offered him heaven for his unmatched generosity. But Mudgala refused heaven and opted to continue his life on earth until he was eligible to get Moksha.

Thus, the brahmana was a man who selflessly offered everything he had, even if it meant he and his family gave up all the food they had and he did it without any expectation of getting something in return. Truly, a sign of generosity that should earn him the title of Daanveer.
